Holland College finishes play at CCAA nationals with 2-5 record

 (Story from ccaa.ca/curling2013) After an exciting three days of competition, the round-robin and tie-breaker have concluded and the semi-finals have been determined at the 2013 CCAA Curling Nationals hosted by NAIT at the Avonaire Curling Club in Edmonton.

On the men’s side, the host team NAIT finished 1st with a 6-1 record and received a bye to the Gold Medal game. Fanshawe, MacEwan, and Confederation all finished tied for 2nd with a 5-2 record. Fanshawe finished 2nd and advanced to Saturday’s semi-final game based on wins over the other two colleges in the round-robin. Confederation and Fanshawe played a hard fought tie-breaker with MacEwan coming out on top with a 6-3 win to advance to the semi-final against Fanshawe Saturday at 9:30am.

The Holland College Hurricanes, skipped by Matthew MacLean, along with Sault and Augustana, finished play with 2-5 win-loss records, while Lakeland went 1-6. The PEI team lost their final two round robin games on Friday – 8-3 to Fanshawe, and 9-3 to MacEwan. The Hurricanes team also includes third Jonathan Kennedy, second Alex Sutherland, and lead stone Wyatt Johnson, and is coached by Angela Hodgson

The women’s side saw two teams tied for first after the round-robin. NAIT and Fanshawe both finished with 6-1 records but Fanshawe advanced to Gold medal game as they defeated NAIT in the round-robin. NAIT will play MacEwan (5-2) in the semi-final Saturday at 9:30am with the winner advancing to play Fanshawe for Gold at 2:30pm (add 3 hours to all times for PEI time)

The loser of both the men’s and women’s semi-finals will be awarded the Bronze medal. Both semi-finals and finals will be webcast live on SportsCanadaTV at http://sportscanada.tv/2013ccaacurling
