Curl PEI among Canada Games Legacy Trust Fund recipients (Sport PEI)

2009 Canada Games Legacy Trust FundThe 2009 Canada Games Dreams and Champions Legacy Trust Fund has announced its first recipients.

A total of $106,000 has been granted to 21 sport, recreation and community groups, covering a wide range of athlete, leadership, and facility projects. The grants are issued as part of the financial legacy following the 2009 Canada Games, hosted by Prince Edward Island.

“We are delighted to announce that 21 groups will be the first to benefit from the Games legacy,” said Brian McFeely, chair of the trustees who oversee the application process. “Thousands of Islanders made those 2009 Games a great success, and the legacy of those Games is that sport and recreation will be able to enjoy huge benefits for generations to come. It is a big day for the Island sport community.”

The surplus generated by the Games has been placed in a trust administered by the Community Foundation of PEI. The trust will be managed, with the interest generated each year being made available to the trustees to disburse to groups through an official applications process.

Emerging athletes needing help for training costs, sport groups trying to improve certification standards for its officials and coaches, and communities looking to introduce new sport and recreation programs, are all set to benefit from the funding.
Full details on the Fund, and the application process, are available on the Sport PEI website at www.sportpei.pe.ca
