Scotties Provincial Women’s Ch’ship, and inaugural Future Scotties set for Ch’town this week

The draw is set for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Championship, and the inaugural “Future Scotties” event, with the Scotties getting underway Thursday, and the Future Scotties getting underway Friday. Both events take place at the Charlottetown Curling Complex and wrap up on Sunday. The defending Scotties champions, the Suzanne Birt rink are back, along with four other teams, skipped by Shirley Berry, Kim Dolan, Lisa Jackson, and Kathy O’Rourke. All teams curl out of the host Charlottetown Curling Complex, with the exception of the Berry foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club and the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. The 2014 championship team advances to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, February 1-9 at the Maurice Richard Arena, Montreal, QC.

Round robin draws for the provincial Scotties are at 2 and 7 pm Thursday and Friday, and 2 pm Saturday. Opening ceremonies go at 6:15 pm on Thursday. Tiebreakers, if needed, go at 7 pm Saturday and, if required, 9 am Sunday. The second and third place teams advance to the semi-final, which will go at 7 pm Saturday if there are no tiebreakers, or 2 pm Sunday. The winner of the semi-final will then face the first place team in the final, which takes place Sunday at 2 if no tiebreakers, or at 7 pm if a tiebreaker was necessary.

The “Future Scotties” is a new developmental event for female curlers who may one day compete in the Scotties..Competitors from the Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s championship were invited, and four teams will be competing, skipped by Meghan Ching and Emily Keen from the Cornwall Curling Club, along with Kaleigh MacKay and her Crapaud/Montague team, and the host club’s Lauren Moerike rink. “Future Scotties” participants will be invited to the Scotties banquet, which precedes the championship, on Wednesday evening, and the opening ceremonies, and will be paired with a Scotties team at these events. The Future Scotties was setup to expose the younger teams to the Island’s premier event for women’s curling. Game times for the Future Scotties round robin event are 10 am Friday through Sunday.
