Top seed Newson, defending champ MacKenzie, along with Jay, Harris win Tankard openers

The 2014 PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship is underway at the Montague Curling Club. In the 2 pm opening draw, top seed Jamie Newson doubled Montague’s Donald Clarey rink 8-4, defending champion Eddie MacKenzie beat Kyle Stevenson 8-3, Summerside’s Blair Jay and his Charlottetown team stole the last two ends to get by Robert Campbell 5-3, and Tyler Harris beat Cornwall’s Bill Hope 7-3, aided by two triples.

Play resumes at 7 pm, with Stevenson playing Campbell, Blair Weeks taking on Harris, last year’s runner up, Rod MacDonald, facing MacKenzie in a rematch of last year’s final, and Hope taking on Clarey. The eventual winner will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 1-9 at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, BC.
