Last year, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation introduced the “Spirit of Sandra” junior scholarships which were established to help enable young curlers to continue to curl competitively while pursuing a post-secondary education.
Our sincere thanks to all of the member associations for your support of our six 2013 scholars. They are an exceptional group of junior curlers who have had great success both on and off the ice. We are very proud of each of them and the way they have endorsed the Foundation and its mandate to raise funds to purchase life-saving equipment for premature and critically ill newborns in neonatal units (NICUs) in hospitals right across Canada.
Six scholarships worth $5,000 each are available again this year. Click here for full details and the application form. The closing date for applications is May 1st.
Please share this information through your own social networks.
The “Spirit of Sandra” scholarships are funded by money that is collected at crowd sweeps at Season of Champions events. We’ve had an outstanding year this year with sweeps in Winnipeg, Montreal and Kamloops.
We are very thankful to the Canadian Curling Association and its member associations for allowing us to pass the buckets at three Season of Champions events this past curling season
Every year that a city hosts a crowd sweep the Foundation donates $50,000 to the local hospital NICU. This year, cheques for $50,000 were presented to the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops and the Children’s Hospital of Manitoba and $25,000 each to the Children’s Hospital and Hôpital Saint-Justine in Montreal.
Ever since the Sandra Schmirler Foundation was created, the curling community has been very generous, and we are indebted to curlers and fans for helping us to keep Sandra’s legacy alive
The Foundation is reaching out to youth in celebration of this three-time Canadian and World Champion and winner of the first Olympic gold medal in curling.
Together we can help these young curlers become champions like Sandra.
Please help us spread the word through your own social networks and web sites and inspire young curlers to visit our web site and fill out an application to become a 2014 Spirit of Sandra Scholar.
Thank you.
