O’Rourke rink repeats as runner-up in Lady Monctonian

For the second year in a row, PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke rink made it to the final of the Lady Monctonian cashspiel at Curl Moncton. However, both times they finished as event runner-up, losing to Charlottetown clubmate Suzanne Birt last year, and this year to the Kelly MacIntosh rink of Nova Scotia, by an 8-2 score. MacIntosh pulled ahead with a triple in the third end and a stolen deuce in the fourth.

Other members of the MacIntosh rink are third: Kristen MacDiarmid, second: Jennifer Crouse, and lead: Karlee Jones. The O’Rourke foursome includes Meagan Hughes, Robyn Green, and Tricia Affleck, with fifth player Stefanie Clark, and coach Al Ledgerwood.

O’Rourke advanced with a 7-3 win over Sylvie Robichaud of NB in the quarter-finals this morning, and a 9-2 routing of Halifax’s Mary-Anne Arsenault foursome in the semis, following up a 5 point third end with a stolen deuce in end four to put the game out of reach at the mid-point.

MacIntosh knocked off defending champ Birt in the semis, with a four point fourth end and a single steal in five and went on to win 7-5. Birt beat Tania Phillips 7-4 in the quarter-finals, while MacIntosh doubled Melissa Adams 8-4.

The other PEI rink in the event, skipped by Kim Dolan, started off with a pair of wins, but lost their next 3 games, each by a single point, to Robichaud, Phillips, and Arsenault, to finish out of the playoffs.
