Six women’s teams, including two from PEI, along with 12 men’s rinks, from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, take to the ice this weekend in New Glasgow NS, as the Sobeys Classic, last held in 2010, returns to the Atlantic Canada curling calendar.

Suzanne Birt, the reigning PEI women’s champ, has changed her entire team this year, bringing in former teammate Robyn Green at third and Meaghan Hughes at second, both from last year’s Kathy O’Rourke – skipped PEI runner-up team, along with lead Marie Christianson, who has moved to the Island from Nova Scotia.

Meanwhile, Shelly Bradley, who played third on last year’s Birt rink, moves up to the skip position with a team that includes three-time reigning PEI junior women’s champion skip Veronica Smith at third, along with Jane DiCarlo at second, and lead Tricia Affleck, who was on last year’s O’Rourke team.

The other teams in the women’s event are from the host province, skipped by Jill Brothers, Emily Dwyer, Jocelyn Nix, and Colleen Pinkney.

The men’s side includes one New Brunswick rink, skipped by Mike Kennedy of Moncton, and Nova Scotia teams captained by Shawn Adams, Jamie Danbrook, Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc, Mike Flemming, Brent MacDougall, Doug MacKenzie, Peter Burgess, Robert Mayhew, Jamie Murphy, Chad Stevens, and Stuart Thompson.

The Classic is scheduled to start on Thursday, and wrap up on Sunday.
