Defending champs unbeaten after opening day Stick Curling Ch’ship action

Three teams, including both defending champs, are still undefeated after opening day action at the Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home PEI 2 Person Stick Curling Championships at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The defending champion Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell duo from Cornwall, along with new entrants Joe Gill and Wayne MacPherson, also from Cornwall, are 2-0 in the Open Divison, where teams can be made up of any combination of male and female players. Three teams are atop the other Open Division round robin pool, all with 2-1 win-loss records. They are the Roger Gavin and Walter Callaghan duo from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton,  the Leonard Peters and Ruth Walsh twosome from the host Crapaud club, and Floyd Stewart and Gordon MacDonald from Montague. Cornwall’s Paul Field and Bryan Sutherland are 1-1. The Women’s Division is led by defending champs Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert, at 2 wins and no losses.

Round robin play continues Thursday with draws at 9:30, 10:45, 12 noon, 2:30, and 3:45.

The playoffs  go Friday with the second and third place round robin teams in the Open pools crossing over to play the third and second place teams respectively, in the other pool at 10:45 am, with the winners taking on the 1st place teams at noon. The winners of the semis advance to the 2:30 pm finals.

The top four open division teams in the semis and the final, along with the top two women’s rinks from this year’s event earn the right to compete in the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, March 16-18 at the Cornwall Curling Club.

The top two Open division teams also earn the right to compete in the 2016 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, March 21-23 in Vernon BC. This is an “open entry” event, but reserves entries for the top two teams from each of BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI.
