There will be no title defence for Team Mary Fay.
Whispers became fact on Saturday when the world junior women’s curling championship team announced that Chester’s Fay is not returning to the group and is walking away from the game, at least for now. She is expected to attend Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., in the fall.
The remainder of the team featuring Karlee Burgess, Kristin Clarke and Janique LeBlanc, along with B.C.’s Sarah Daniels, and coach Andrew Atherton were competing in Sherwood Park, Alta., at a Grand Slam of Curling event. The team posted a 1-3 record in their final competition of the season, ending a historic run.
Fay missed the final competition to study for International Baccalaureate exams at Park View Education Centre. Daniels, the alternate for the worlds, joined in for the week with Clarke moving into Fay’s customary role as skip.
“It was a very difficult decision for me to make and I didn’t take it lightly,” Fay said in an email to localxpress.ca. “Curling has been a huge part of my life and it has given me opportunities that I never would have dreamt were possible.
