Lenentine successfully defended her 2017 provincial title, going 7-0 (won-lost) in this year’s Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships, which wrapped up at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary on Friday evening.

Lenentine and her rink of Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne, Rachel O’Connor and coach Pat Quilty faced a Charlottetown/Cornwall/Crapaud rink skipped by Lauren Ferguson in the C final.
The Lenentine rink scored a single with the hammer in the first end, and stole its way to a 5-0 lead going into the fifth-end break, before Ferguson staged a comeback, conceding in the 10th trailing 6-3.

Lenentine and MacFadyen go undefeated to win Pepsi Juniors without needing Saturday round

It was a clean sweep at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary for both the defending champion Lauren Lenentine jr. women’s rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, and the Alex MacFadyen jr. men’s foursome from the Silver Fox in Summerside. Both teams went undefeated, capturing all three sections of the modified triple knockout draw, so that the event wrapped up with the “C” finals on Friday evening without playing the Saturday championship round.

The Lauren Lenentine rink, which includes third stone Kristie Rogers, second Breanne Burgoyne, and lead Rachel O’Connor, with coach Pat Quilty, beat Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly rink 11-1 in the A final, and went on to defeat the Lauren Ferguson rink from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown 6-4 in the B, and 6-3 in the C final of the six-team field. Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris, and Lexie Murray, with coach David Murphy, round out the runner-up Ferguson team, while third Cynthia Pearson, second Tatiana Kelly, and lead Meghan Ching, with coach Mitch O’Shea complete the Kelly rink, the other section winner.

In the four-team Jr. Men’s division, the Alex MacFadyen team, with third James Dalton, second stone Leslie Noye, and lead Parker MacFadyen, with coach David MacFadyen, played the Mitchell Schut rink from Cornwall in all three finals, winning 7-3, 9-4, and 8-7. Schut got off to a bad start in the C final, giving up four in the first end, but fought back to narrow the gap to one by the end of the game. Nick Johnston, Colin MacKenzie, and Liam Kelly, with coaches Bill Hope and Lori Robinson, complete the runner-up Team Schut.

The winning Lenentine and MacFadyen rinks now advance to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.

Pepsi PEI Jr. Ch’ships could wrap up this evening

The  “C”  finals of the modified triple knockout draw of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships go at 6:30 this evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. Two teams, the defending champion Lauren Lenentine junior women’s team from Cornwall, and the Alex MacFadyen junior men’s rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside, have won the first two of the three sections of the draw, and a win by either of them this evening would book their ticket to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec. Their opponents, the Lauren Ferguson team from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown, and the Mitchell Schut foursome from Cornwall would have to win tonight’s game and two championship round games on Saturday at 9:30 and 2, in order to take the provincial title.

Lenentine beat Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly 8-5 while Ferguson got by Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt by the same score this afternoon to advance to the C final. Lenentine beat Ferguson in the A final, and Kelly in the  B, while MacFadyen got by Schut in both the A and B finals. Schut beat Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan team this morning to advance to the junior men’s C final.

End by end results are available at PEICurling.com. Six junior women’s and four junior men’s teams began play on Wednesday.

Lenentine wins 2nd section, Mitchell Schut advances to C final at Pepsi Juniors

The defending champion Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall remains undefeated and is one step closer to repeating as Junior Women’s champion at the Pepsi Provincial Juniors at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, after winning both the “A” and now the “B” finals of the modified triple knockout draw. This puts the team into both Saturday finals, where they will win the event if they win either game, while their opponent, the C finalist, would have to win both. If Team Lenentine advances to and wins the C event final at 6:30 this evening, they will be declared the champion at that point, and the championship round would not be played.

The Lenentine squad beat the Lauren Ferguson team from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown by a 6-4 score in the B final this morning, stealing singles in the fifth through seventh ends. There were also two games in the C event this morning, with Annika Kelly of Charlottetown eliminating Cornwall’s Emily Sanderson team in a closely-fought 8-5 battle. Kelly got out of the gate fast with a three-point first end, but Sanderson scored a trio of singles to tie it up, and pulled ahead with a stolen single in the seventh. Kelly recovered with a deuce in eight and a pair of stolen singles to pull out the win. The other game saw Sydney Howatt eliminate her Cornwall clubmate Rachel MacLean with a 5-2 win. MacLean led 1-0 after the first five ends, with Howatt recording a triple in end six and a ninth-end steal for the win.

Lenentine plays Kelly, with Howatt facing Ferguson in the “C” semi-finals at 2 this afternoon, with the winners going to the 6:30 pm “C” final.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Men’s division, the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall will be competing in their third section final, at 6:30 this evening. They will have to beat the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox three times – the C final, and both Saturday championship round games in order to win the championship, while a win in any of these games  would punch MacFadyen’s ticket to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.

Schut eliminated the Chase MacMillan team from Charlottetown with a 7-2 win this morning, after MacMillan sent Mitchell’s brother Devin to the sidelines with a 9-3 win on Thursday evening.

2018 Canad Inns Mixed Doubles Trials begin Tuesday in Portage la Prairie (Curling Canada)

A chance to make curling history will be on the line when the inaugural Canad Inns Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials get underway Tuesday in Portage la Prairie, Man.

The event, scheduled for Jan. 2-7 at Stride Place, will determine Canada’s first Olympic mixed doubles curling team, after the event was declared an official Winter Olympic medal sport by the International Olympic Committee in 2015.

And considering the level of talent that will be on display in Portage, it’s not a stretch to say that the 2018 Canad Inns Mixed Doubles Curling Trials will be the most competitive mixed doubles competition ever staged.

Eighteen teams, including numerous Olympic, World and Canadian champions, will gather in Portage for the seven-day competition, which will feature six draws daily at Stride Place Tuesday through Thursday, with tiebreakers, if necessary, and the opening round of the eight-team playoffs set for Friday.

The teams are split into two nine-team pools, with seedings based on the Canadian Mixed Doubles Rankings. The teams will play a single round-robin within their pools, before eight teams (first and second in each pool, and the next four best win-loss records) move on to the playoffs.

CLICK HERE to see the full list of teams and the complete event schedule. CLICK HERE to view the practice schedule for Jan. 1 at Stride Place.

Among the entries are seven former Olympic gold-medallists, including two teams — Jennifer Jones/Mark Nichols (Winnipeg/St. John’s) and Kaitlyn Lawes/John Morris (Winnipeg/Canmore, Alta.) — who’ve won Olympic titles in four-player curling. The other past Olympic gold winners are Dawn McEwen (playing with husband Mike McEwen), Brad Gushue (playing with Val Sweeting) and Jill Officer (playing with Reid Carruthers).

The winning team, accompanied by national mixed doubles coach Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg, will join Canada’s four-player teams (skipped by Rachel Homan and Kevin Koe) at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, scheduled for Feb. 9-25. Mixed doubles curling, featuring eight countries, will actually get underway the day before the Opening Ceremonies, on Feb. 8, and will conclude with the gold- and bronze-medal games on Feb. 13.

Canada will enter the inaugural Olympic mixed doubles competition as the top-ranked country in the world in the discipline.

Tickets for the 2018 Canad Inns Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials are now available at www.curling.ca/2018mixeddoublestrials/tickets/.

CBC Sports will offer live-streaming coverage of every draw at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices. In addition, broadcast coverage of the final two days of the event, including the playoffs and final, will be available on CBC. Also, Radio-Canada will offer live-streaming coverage of the closing weekend.

MacFadyen, Lenentine still undefeated, PEI men’s junior ch’ship could conclude Fri. evening (Journal)

O’LEARY – The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside, and Lauren Lenentine’s defending-champion women’s rink from the Cornwall Curling Club are still undefeated after two days of play at the 2018 Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships.
The competition for curlers under 21 years of age will decide the Prince Edward Island representatives for the New Holland Canadian curling championships in Shawinigan, Que., from Jan. 21 to 28.

MacFadyen and his rink of James Dalton, Leslie Noye and Parker MacFadyen, moved to 3-0 (won-lost) in the modified triple knockout men’s championship with a 9-4 win over Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut in the B final Thursday evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club. He stole three in the eighth end to trigger the handshakes.
That win puts MacFadyen directly into the C event final in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. draw, where a victory would book his team’s tickets to Shawinigan.

Meanwhile, Lenentine, whose team consists of Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne and Rachel O’Connor, boosted her record to 4-0 in the six-team women’s championship with a 9-3 win over Rachel MacLean in Thursday evening’s draw. That victory advances her to Friday’s 9:30 a.m. women’s B final against Lauren Ferguson, whose Charlottetown/Cornwall/Crapaud rink won its Thursday evening game 11-3 over Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly, sealing the deal with a five-ender in the sixth. Rounding out the Ferguson rink are Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris and Lexie Murray.

MacFadyen team one win away from Pepsi Jr. Men’s title, Lenentine vs Ferguson in Jr. Women’s B final

The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox club in Summerside remains undefeated in the four-team junior men’s division, and needs to win just one of their next three games in order to become the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s champions. They captured the “A”  final on Wednesday, and the “B” final this evening, both against Mitchell Schut and his Cornwall team, winning this evening by a 9-4 score, after stealing a triple in the eighth end to bring the game to an early conclusion. This win puts the MacFadyen team into the “C”  final of the modified triple-knockout draw, as well as both games of the two-game championship round. A win in any of these games will give him the title, without having to play the subsequent games.

In the other junior men’s game this evening, the young Chase MacMillan rink from Charlottetown eliminated the Devin Schut team with a 9-3 win in eight ends, leading 6-0 at the fifth end break. MacMillan now takes on Mitchell Schut in the “C” semi-final at 9:30 am Friday, with the winner facing MacFadyen in the “C” final at 6:30 pm.

On the Junior Women’s side, the defending champion Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall, who won the “A” final, is still undefeated, and will play their clubmates the Lauren Ferguson rink in the “B” final at 9:30 am Friday. Lenentine led 7-0 after three ends in her “B” semi-final game this evening against clubmate Rachel MacLean, going on to win 9-3 in seven ends. The other Lauren (Ferguson) and her team from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown downed Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly squad by an 11-3 score in only six ends, recording both a four and a five-point end.

The “C” event also gets underway on Friday morning at 9:30, with Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt and Rachel MacLean facing off in one “must win” game, and Emily Sanderson of Cornwall taking on Kelly in the other. The winner of Howatt vs. MacLean takes on Ferguson in one “C”  semi-final at 2 pm, with the winner of Sanderson vs. Kelly facing Lenentine in the other. The winners advance to the “C” final at 6:30.

The two-game championship round is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 and 2 pm. If Lenentine, who won the A final, also wins the B and C finals, the championship round would not be required.

The eventual junior men’s and women’s winners advance to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.

6:30 pm Pepsi Jr Men’s “B” finals and Jr. Women’s “B” semis set

The B section finals of the modified triple knockout draw are coming up at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

Just like the “A” section, it’ll be Summerside’s Alex MacFadyen taking on Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut,  at 6:30 in the junior men’s B section final this evening. The B semi, like the A, was a battle between siblings Mitchell and Devin Schut, with Mitchell again coming out ahead, this time by a 7-4 score. Devin Schut, along with Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan now have two losses, with one facing elimination in the other 6:30 pm junior men’s game.

Also at 6:30 are the junior women’s “B” semi-finals, with “A” winner Lauren Lenentine taking on Cornwall clubmate Rachel MacLean, and “A” runner-up Annika Kelly facing Lauren Ferguson and her Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown rink. The winners square off in the B final at 9:30 am Friday.

Ferguson beat Sydney Howatt of Cornwall 9-3 this afternoon, while MacLean beat clubmate Emily Sanderson 7-5 to advance. Howatt and Sanderson drop down to the last chance “C” flight of the six team draw. Both “C” finals go at 6:30 on Friday evening with the championship games, if needed, taking place at 9:30 am and 2 pm on Saturday.

If  “A” section winners MacFadyen or Lenentine were to win all three sections, they would win the event without a championship round being played. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

Live, end-by-end results are available at PEICurling.com. Six junior women’s and four junior men’s teams began play on Wednesday.

The winning Junior Men’s and  Women’s champions will advance to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.
