Jones and Epping win Shorty Jenkins Classic in Cornwall ON, Suzanne Birt rink finishes at 2-2

The 2019-2020 curling season is underway, with the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic happening Sept. 10-15 in Cornwall Ontario. PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink finished play with a 2-2 win-loss record, with wins over Toronto’s Kaitlyn Jones rink, and Cornwall ON’s Jennifer Harvey foursome, and losses to Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura and Manitoba’s Tracy Fleury. Birt made it to the quarter-finals in her season-opening event, the Oakville Tankard, the previous weekend.

The women’s event was won by Jennifer Jones, with a 6-4 win over another Manitoba team, skipped by Tracy Fleury, in the final, while John Epping and his Toronto team, who are defending champs, got by Brad Jacobs and his Northern Ontario rink 5-3 in the men’s final. The Brad Gushue rink, which includes PEI’s Brett Gallant at second stone, lost 7-4 to Epping in the quarter-final round.

PEI’s Adam Casey is playing second on the Jason Gunnlaugson rink out of Winnipeg this year. The team finished out of playoff contention with one win vs four losses.
