Team Birt undefeated at Monctonian, Smith, Zacharias in “C” qualifiers at OVCA Jr. Superspiel

The Suzanne Birt rink from Charlottetown has a perfect 4-0 record in the $7,500 purse 15 team women’s side of the Atlantic Superstore Monctonian Challenge at Curl Moncton, and have advanced to the 8:30 am quarter-final round, where they play the Julie McAvoy team (2-2). Defending champion Andrea Crawford from Fredericton is the only other undefeated team. 2016 event champions, the Jill Brothers team from Halifax, which includes PEI’s Erin Carmody at third stone are at 3-1. The Semis are at noon, finals at 3.

On the 12 team men’s side of the event, which has a purse of $13,750. Ottawa’s Bryan Cochrane, which includes PEI’s Ian MacAulay and Morgan Currie, and PEI’s Neil Gallant and his Dartmouth rink both finished round robin play at 2-3.Gallant beat Cochrane 7-6 in an extra end in the qualifying round. Scott Jones of Moncton and James Grattan of Oromocto lead their pools with 4-1 record. Semis are at 12 noon, finals go at 3.

In Junior action, PEI’s Tyler Smith team, which includes Ryan Abraham, Jake Fleming, and Ryan Lowery, along with the MacKenzie Zacharias rink from Winnipeg, which includes PEI’s Lauren Lenentine, and PEI’s Katie Shaw team, which includes Alexis Burris, Meghan Sherren, and Lexie Murray, are in the 16 team Brokerlink OVCA Junior Superspiel in the Ottawa area, which also wraps up today, with semis at 1 pm and finals at 5 pm Atlantic.

The Smith foursome sit at 4-2 going into Sunday play, and play the Jordan McNamara rink from Ottawa at 10 am PEI time in a “C” qualifier game for the semis. Smith lost his “A” qualifier game to Switzerland’s Yves Wagenseil,

Team Zacharias lost their opener but picked up four straight wins going before losing 8-7 in an extra end to the Selina Witschonke squad from Switzerland in a Saturday night “B” qualifier. Zacharias (4-2) now plays Ottawa’s Lindsay Thorne in a 10 am Atlantic Sunday “C” qualifier for the semi-final round.

Zacharias beat Shaw, who finished with a 0-4 record, in their round-robin encounter.
