Silver Fox Men’s and Women’s rinks capture PEI Curling Club Championships

It’s a double championship win for the Silver Fox teams at the PEI Curling Club Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Club, with the Summerside club’s Men’s team, skipped by Leo Stewart, following up Monday afternoon’s Women’s Championship win with a close 8-7 victory over the host club’s champions to capture the men’s title. The Fox men had a 5-2 lead at the 4th end break, and were ahead 7-3 after six, but the Charlottetown Curling Club rink, skipped by Paul MacCormack, tied the game with a four-point seventh end, although they didn’t have last rock advantage coming home, and the Fox team scored a single for the victory.

The Silver Fox team played (and won) three games on Monday, winning their morning semi-final 10-6 over the Freddy Fraser-skipped Western Community Curling Team from Alberton, helped out by a six-point third end, to advance to the first of two finals against the Charlottetown team on Monday afternoon. In that game, the Fox rink handed Charlottetown their first loss of the event, by a close 6-5 score, to force the second “winner take all” final, as the rules dictate that an unbeaten team after round-robin play has to be beaten twice in the championship round in order for the other team to win the event.

Men’s Club Champions from the Silver Fox Curling Club (L-R): Andrew Robinson (Curl PEI Past President), Leo Stewart (skip), Edward White (3rd), Darrell Thibeau (2nd), Corey Montgomery (lead)

Men’s finalist team from the Charlottetown Curling Club (L-R): Andrew Robinson (Curl PEI Past President), Paul MacCormack (skip), Robbie Doherty (3rd), Ryan Giddens (2nd), Rob Newson (lead), Cory Arseneau (alternate)

On Monday afternoon the Silver Fox women’s team, skipped by Veronica Smith, finished the event undefeated (7-0), edging the Crapaud Community Curling Club women, skipped by Stephanie Schnare, by a 5-4 score in the final. Smith had a bye to that final, while Crapaud advanced after their scheduled morning game against Western Community was forfeited by the Alberton team.
