PEI curlers are doing well in Halifax and Chester this weekend, with Team Birt, who play out of the Montague and Cornwall curling clubs, qualifying for the playoff round in the Dave Jones Stanhope Simpson Insurance Cashspiel at the Mayflower in Halifax with a 3-1 win-loss record and taking on Team Theresa Breen of Halifax (4-0) in the semi-finals at 10:30 am. The final goes at 1:30 pm.

On the men’s side, Team Gushue, which includes PEI’s Brett Gallant, is undefeated at 4-0 and heading to the 10:30 am semi-finals, with the final going at 1:30 pm. Junior Joel Krats is filling in for Geoff Walker on Team Gushue this weekend.
At the Oak Island Junior Cashspiel in Chester, Cornwall’s Team Mitchell Schut beat the 2-time defending champion Graham Weagle rink from the host club 6-5 on Saturday evening. Both teams have a 3-1 record going into the playoffs. The semi-finals are at 10 am with the final at 2 pm.
The Brayden Snow team, also playing out of Cornwall this season, finished with a 1-3 record, beating the Adam McEachern rink of Halifax 9-5 in the round-robin. Haligonian Nick Mosher leads that pool at 4-0 going into the semis, with McEachern next at 2-2.
On the Junior Women’s side, the Taylour Stevens rink from Halifax, which includes former Cornwall member Lauren Ferguson, qualified for the playoffs with a 3-1 record, and take on Marin Callaghan and her Halifax rink in the 10 am semis. The other semi sees Melodie Forsythe (3-1) of Moncton play Emilie Proulx and her Lower Sackville NS squad (also 3-1). Final is at 2.
Cornwall’s Team Katie Shaw lost 7-5 to Stevens and 8-5 to Proulx, finishing at 0-4.
Gushue, Birt, and Stevens are among the rinks live-streaming their games this weekend.
