2023 Bogside Cup – Day 1 in the Books

There’s something in the water, or maybe the taps at the 2nd Bogside Cup in Montague as defending Christina Black continued on last years success going 2-0 Friday. Black and her team of Jenn Baxter, Karlee Everist and Shelley Barker needed 8 ends to top Island rink Lauren Ferguson 7-5 before topping Nicole Arsenault-Bishop in their second draw of the day. Black and her team have yet to taste defeat in Montague, as they went undefeated last year on their way to the title.

Former PEI Scotties player Marie Christianson and her rink from Halifax also sit atop Pool A with a 2-0 record after wins over Sophie Blades and Jenny White, both from PEI. Sophie Blades and Lauren Ferguson both sit at 1-1 after day 1.

In Pool B, Island rink Jane DiCarlo, Tammy Dewar and Laurie St. Georges are all 2-0 after draw 1. DiCarlo was awarded a 1-0 win in their first draw after Team Traxler from Alaska, USA had flight issues and could not make their opening draw. In their 2nd draw of the day, DiCarlo faced a heavy mountain to climb being down 5-0 after 3 ends to Jessica Daigle from Halifax. However, DiCarlo and her rink of Veronica & Sabrina Smith and Whitney Jenkins slowly clawed back to tie the game in the 7th before stealing 2 points and the win in the 8th.

Tanya Hilliard used a big steal of 4 in the 4th end to get by PEI team Amanda Power and followed up with their 2nd win of the day over Montague based rink, Sydney Carver. Laurie St. Georges of Quebec got by Carver 9-3 and went the distance against Power for their second win of the day to sit on top of Pool B at 2-0 with DiCarlo and Hilliard.

An interesting story at this year’s spiel is Team Traxler from Alaska, USA competing. The team is currently chasing just a couple CTRS points to qualify for the USA National Championships. This is the final week to accumulate CTRS points for the USA National Curling Championship so there might be just a little added pressure for this Alaska based team who traveled 7000 KM to attend the Bogside Cup.

Action continues today with draws at 9:00, 12:30, 4:00 and 7:30 at the Montague Curling Club. Scores and results will be updated on CurlingZone. Admission is free so come down and watch some of the best Curlers in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and America battle it out for the $10,000 purse.
