Gagnante!!!  Laurie St-Georges and her team of Vice, Jamie Sinclair, 2nd Emily Riley and Lead, Kelly Middaugh captured the Bogside Cup Championship at the Montague Curling Club on Sunday.

St-Georges opened the scoring in the first end with 2, only to see Hilliard secure her deuce in the second with a draw to the 4 foot.  The 3rd end saw several rocks in play and was concluded with St-Georges making a spectacular in off double to put a 3 ball on the board and take a 5-2 lead.  St-Georges forced Hilliard to a single in 4 to head into the break with a 5-3 lead and hammer. After a blank in the fifth end, Hilliard forced St-Georges to her single in 6 and then scored 2 in the 7th to trail 6-5 coming home. St-Georges kept the front of the house clean with some double peels from both Emily Riley and Jamie Sinclair. On her last, St-Georges was facing 3 counters. With the help of Kelly Middaugh going coast to coast on the broom, the shot was made and St-Georges and her team locked up the Bogside Cup and first place prize of $3000.

Earlier in the day, the shorthanded team of Jessica Daigle got by Christina Black, while local U18 team Sophie Blades out of the Cornwall and Summerside rinks upended Heather Smith from Haliax. In the Semi finals, St. Georges used big ends of 3 and 4 to get by Blades, while the 3 person team of Daigle ran out of steam against T-Hills who stole the 4th and 5th end before Daigle shook.

A consistent topic of conversation around the Montague Curling Club from all 16 teams was how incredible the ice conditions were. In her victory speech, St-Georges stood up and said “This is the best club ice any of us have played on. These kinds of ice conditions are what you want leading up to the Scotties because it is very similar.” Huge thank you’s go out to Larry Richards and his Ice crew for their top notch conditions, Thomas Annear and everyone at the Montague Curling Club who helped out and accommodated the curlers, Ryan Giddens for Coordinating the spiel, and Bogside Brewing.
