After losing the A section finals on Sunday, defending champions Brett Gallant and Erin Carmody came back with victories in the B section of the Pepsi Juniors on Monday at the Charlottetown Curling Club. They were playing the same teams as Sunday, with three-time defending champion Gallant, from Charlottetown, beating Summerside’s Sam Ramsay foursome by an 8-3 score, with four of his points coming in the seventh end.
Meanwhile, two-time defending champion Carmody, from Summerside, doubled Silver Fox clubmate Anita Casey by an 8-4 score to take the junior women’s B section in this triple knockout competition.
Playing with Carmody are Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Jessica van Ouwerkerk, and Darcee Birch, with coach Al Ledgerwood. Gallant’s team includes Seven Mile Bay’s Adam Casey, Summerside’s Anson Carmody, and Jamie Danbrook, who was on British Columbia’s Junior Men’s championship rink last year, and is now attending school on PEI. Peter and Kathie Gallant share coaching duties for the Gallant squad.
Earlier on Monday, Carmody edged out Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton team 9-8, while Anita Casey got by Cornwall’s Sarah Clow rink 9-7 to set up the rematch between Carmody and Casey.
Gallant beat Alberton’s Spencer Pitre by an 8-3 score, while Ramsay shaded Nick van Ouwerkerk, who is playing out of Charlottetown, 9-8 in an extra end to advance to the B final.
On Sunday, Ramsay had beaten Gallant 6-2, while Casey scored five points in the ninth and tenth ends, and won an extra-end measure to beat Carmody 10-9 in the A finals.
On Tuesday morning at 9:30, Ramsay faces Spencer Pitre of Alberton, while Gallant takes on Montague’s Matthew Nabuurs, with the winners facing off in the junior men’s C final at 2:30. Pitre beat Tyler Davies of Charlottetown 9-5, while Nabuurs edged Nick van Ouwerkerk 6-5 to advance to the C division.
In the junior women’s section, it’s Casey playing Charlottetown’s Katie Sharkey, and Carmody against Cornwall’s Sarah Clow at 9:30 am, with the winners playing off at 2:30 in the C final. Sharkey eliminated Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink with a 9-6 victory, while Clow got by Tiffany Sweet of O’Leary 9-8 in an extra end on Monday evening to advance to Tuesday’s C playoffs.
The winners of the A, B and C divisions will compete in a two game championship round on Wednesday, also at 9:30 and 2:30. If a team wins two of the three sections, they will take the championship if they win either of the two games against the other team. If there are three separate winners, the team that played in the most section finals gets a bye to the second game, while the other two teams play off in the first game, with the winner advancing to the final match.
The eventual winners will compete in the
M&M Canadian Juniors, January 31-February 8th in Salmon Arm BC.
