Cornwall curlers off to Scotland to compete in Strathcona Cup

Roddie MacLean and Jim Farquharson from the Cornwall Curling Club leave for Scotland on Monday to compete in the 100th Canada vs Scotland Strathcona cup. They are part of the 40 member Canadian contingent which, for the first time, has representatives from all provinces. The Scottish contingent visited several PEI curling clubs on their tour of Canada in 2003.

The Canadians will arrive in Glasgow on January 7, 2009, attend an opening banquet on January 8 and then curl against former tour members and the Scots Host Committee on January 9 and 10. The team then splits in two with 20 members going north and 20 going south. In all they will curl in over 20 cities before getting back together in Edinburgh for some reminiscing and a farewell banquet on January 30.

Farquharson and MacLean return to the Island on February 1st.

The Strathcona Cup was first presented in 1909 by Sir Donald Smith, Lord Strathcona, to recognize the winner of a curling tour between Canada and Scotland. The first tour was held in 1903 when Scotland sent a group of curlers to tour Canada and the northern United States. In 1909 the Canadians mounted a return tour to Scotland, and this is when Lord Strathcona offered the trophy to commemorate the winning side. The Scots’ second tour to Canada was held in 1912. This event continues today on a five year alternate tour schedule.
