MacDonald, Likely, Newson and MacFadyen win Labatt Tankard openers

The opening round of the Labatt Tankard Final Eight Championship Round on Tuesday evening saw four teams from the Charlottetown Curling Club come out on the winning side

Qualifier number one, Rod MacDonald doubled number eight qualifer Clair Sweet of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary 8-4, aided by a 5th end triple. Number two qualifier John Likely edged Charlottetown clubmate Bill Hope, who qualified in the seventh spot, by a 5-4 score, while number three qualifier Jamie Newson scored two four-enders en route to an 11-7 win over number six qualifier Mike Gaudet.

Provincial Seniors runner-up Ted MacFadyen, Qualifier number five,  beat Seniors champ Mel Bernard (Qualifier four) of the Silver Fox 8-3 in the final match of the night.

Action resumes on Wednesday with draws at 2 and 8 pm. The opening ceremonies go at 7 pm.

The Labatt Tankard winner will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 7-15 at the Saddledome in Calgary.
