PEI Curling Hall of Fame and Museum to induct eight members

The Prince Edward Island Curling Hall of Fame and Museum, formed last year under the auspices of the PEI Curling Association, is set to host its second annual induction ceremony on Monday October 20, 2008 at the Charlottetown Curling Club, Charlottetown, PEI.

Eight inductees will be honoured for their outstanding contributions to the sport of curling: Allan Ledgerwood, Charlottetown; Dr. Wen Macdonald (posthumously), Charlottetown; Elizabeth (“Liz”) Macdonald (posthumously), Charlottetown; Freeman Miles, Miscouche; Leonard Murphy, Alberton; John Drake Squarebriggs (posthumously), Charlottetown; Marie Toole, Charlottetown; and Orville Willis, O’Leary.

The main objectives of the Curling Hall of Fame and Museum are “to recognize, honour and pay tribute to individuals or teams on the basis of playing ability, sportsmanship and character, who have achieved extraordinary distinction in the sport of curling, whether that distinction be as an amateur or a professional” and “to recognize, honour and pay tribute to those individuals who have given distinguished service and have made major contributions to the development of curling on PEI”.

“It is important that PEI curlers and builders be recognized for their achievements in their sport”, says Jerry Muzika, Chairman of the PEI Curling Hall and Museum, and recent inductee to the PEI Sports Hall of Fame. Muzika notes that some of the recipients are already in the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and says it is appropriate they be recognized in their home province as well.

Ray McCourt, President of the PEI Curling Association, says that he is very pleased that the Curling Hall of Fame and Museum is continuing its work to recognize curlers and builders, and invites everyone to come out and honour the inductees.

The event, with Master of Ceremonies Paul H. Schurman, gets underway at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 each, and are available from Greg Lucas at Sport PEI, 40 Burns Ave., Charlottetown, phone 368-4986, and the Charlottetown Curling Club, 892-7467.

Ford Men’s – A Golden Anniversary on Ice

(CCA) You are cordially invited to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ford Men’s World Curling Championship, April 4 – 12, 2009 at the Moncton Coliseum.

The guests of honour will include the most accomplished curlers in the game today. Moncton is the perfect setting, so rich in memories of some of the most influential moments in curling history.

There’s Rick Folk’s 1980 Silver Broom victory shattering the “LaBonte Curse”. The “Al Hackner Shot” in the 1985 Brier that for many still stands as one of the most dramatic ever. And, in an experiment that truly revolutionized the game, the introduction of the “Four Rock Rule” at the Moncton 100 CashSpiel.

Maritime curling purists who want to see modern history in the making from the best seats in the house should make their move fast. (After October 31st, full event passes will no longer be available in the end zones.)

M&M Meat Shops Extend National Sponsorship through 2012

(CCA) September 25, 2008…The Canadian Curling Association (CCA) today announced that M&M Meat Shops, Canada’s leading retail chain of specialty frozen foods, has signed a new three-year agreement to be the title sponsor of the Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships through 2012.

As a title sponsor, M&M Meat Shops also becomes a sub-sponsor of the other Season of Champions events – Continental Cup, Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Tim Hortons Brier, Canada Cup and Ford Worlds.

“The Canadian Curling Association has a very strong foundation of corporate support which enables it to be as successful as possible in achieving its mandate,” said Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Curling Association. “A large part of this core support comes from our partner, M&M Meat Shops.

“They are a first class organization that we are very pleased to see have agreed to build and enhance our existing relationship. With this, we are proud to announce that M&M Meat Shops will continue to be the title sponsor of the Canadian Junior Championships through 2012. “M&M Meat Shops has been encouraging Canadians to spend quality time with friends and families for more than 27 years and curling is a great community-based game that connects people from coast-to-coast,” says Mac Voisin, founder of M&M Meat Shops. “Our company is a proud supporter and avid fan of the Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.”

M&M Meat Shops first became involved with the CCA’s Season of Champions as title sponsor of the 2006 Canadian Juniors in Thunder Bay.  The company renewed its agreement in September of that year for a three-year commitment, which concludes in 2009, prior to today’s announcement of an additional three-year extension as title sponsor through 2012.

Curler Jerry Muzika among PEI Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Jerry Muzika of Charlottetown is among four upcoming inductees into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame.

Charlottetown’s Jerry Muzika has had a distinguished career in curling, one which has seen him become a member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, to which he was inducted in 1989 in the builder category.

A fine player in his own right, Jerry had three trips to nationals, including a trip to the Brier with Bob Dillon in 1974, and two Senior Championships in 1990 and 1993. It was as an administrator however that he has made the most contribution – starting with positions at the Charlottetown Curling Club, he worked his way up to become provincial president, before taking on important roles with the national body.

From 1982 to 1988 Jerry held most of the key positions in Canadian curling, including that of President from 1986/87. He also served on many organizing committees on major events, and in addition he has played an important role with the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and Museum, serving three terms as president.

Muzika’s passion for the history of the sport has seen him chronicle the story of curling in the province, and he achieved his ambition of setting up the P.E.I Curling Hall of Fame, with the first inductions taking place in 2007.

A life member of both the Charlottetown Club and the Canadian Curling Association, Muzika received one of the sport’s highest honours in 2003 when he was inducted into the Governor General’s Curling Club, recognizing those who have contributed to the growth and promotion of curling in Canada and elsewhere.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside on Sept. 20. beginning at 7 pm. Tickets at $10 each are available from both the Silver Fox in Summerside, and Sport P.E.I. in Charlottetown (phone 368-4547).

Other inductees will include legendary Mi’kmaq distance runner John Paul, who raced for almost three decades, hockey builder and coach John (Jake) Milford, the only Island born member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, and Earl Ross, the only Canadian to win a NASCAR Winston Cup race.
