PEI’s 2010 M&M Meat Shops Provincial Mixed curling champions, the Robert Campbell rink, begin play on Saturday at the Canadian Mixed in Morris Manitoba. On Campbell’s team this time are third Rebecca Jean MacPhee, a six-time PEI women’s champion, along with second Robbie Doherty, and lead Jackie Reid.

Campbell, who is also an eight time PEI men’s champ, is seeking his second Canadian Mixed title, having won back in 1989, the last time the event was held in Manitoba, beating the host province’s Jeff Stoughton rink in that final. At that time Campbell was playing with Angela Roberts, and Mark and Kathy O’Rourke. With his men’s team, Campbell won the Rodd Curling Classic last weekend, edging PEI’s only other Canadian Mixed champion skip, Peter Gallant, who won in 1987, 6-5 in the final.
With a population of less than 2,000, Morris is the smallest community ever chosen to host a Canadian Curling Association national championship.
Other teams competing are: Gary Wensman (NL), Charlie Sullivan (NB), Paul Flemming (NS), Simon Hebert (Quebec), Chris Gardner (Ontario), Craig Kochan (Northern Ontario), Terry McNamee (Manitoba), Steven Slupski (Saskatchewan), Tim Krassman (Alberta), Tim Buchy (BC) and Steve Moss (Yukon/NWT). Last year’s champions were the Mark Dacey rink from Halifax.
Two players from the winning team will represent Canada at the World Mixed Doubles Championship, April 15-24 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Island rink opens play against Newfoundland and Labrador at 6:30 pm on Saturday (8:30 PEI time). Following Saturday’s single draw, there are three draws daily, Sunday through Thursday. After the final draw of the round robin on Friday morning, the first place team advances directly to Saturday’s final, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final following any required tiebreakers
