Birt advances to Hub City finals; Campbell in semis

The Suzanne Birt rink, which includes Shelly Bradley, Robyn MacPhee, and Leslie MacDougall remains undefeated at the Molson Canadian Hub City Shootout in Moncton, and advanced to the noon women’s final against Sylvie Robichaud of New Brunswick, after blanking New Brunswick’s Andrea Kelly rink 6-0 in only four ends this morning.

The other PEI women’s rinks competing in the final round robin draw this morning lost their games, with Kathy O’Rourke losing a 5-4 extra-end decision to Melissa Adams of Moncton, and Donna Butler losing 8-3 to Rebecca Atkinson of  Saint John.

In the men’s quarter-finals, Robert Campbell of Charlottetown edged New Brunswick’s Paul Dobson team 5-4 to earn a spot in the noon semis. Other members of the Campbell team are Jamie Newson, Tyler MacKenzie, and Rob Doherty. In other games, James Grattan edged out PEI’s Rod MacDonald rink 6-5 in an extra end, Chad Stevens of Nova Scotia beat Glen MacLeod, also of Nova Scotia, 5-2, and Marcel Robichaud beat another NB rink, skipped by Jamie Brannen, by a 7-2 score. The noon semis see Robichaud take on Grattan, and Campbell face Stevens. The men’s finals go at 3:30 pm.
