The Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel wrapped up this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with 24 teams from across the Maritimes taking part. The men’s and women’s finals came down to four Island rinks, with the Sarah Fullerton rink from Cornwall and Charlottetown fighting back from a 5-0 deficit to edge their Cornwall clubmates the Veronica Smith team 9-8 in an extra end; and the Sam Ramsay rink, who curl out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, but include players from across the Ialand, doubling the Matthew MacLean team from O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club 8-4.

The Fullerton foursome, which includes Michelle McQuaid at third, second Sara MacRae, lead Hillary Thompson, and coach Angela Hodgson, were down 5-0 after five ends of play, after the Smith rink, which includes Sarah’s sister Katie Fullerton at third, Sabrina Smith at second, and lead stone Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith, took a single in the second end, and stole singles in ends three and five, and a deuce in the fourth end. Fullerton came back with four points in the sixth, kept Smith to one in the seventh, and took two points in the eight to tie the game at six-all. Fullerton stole a deuce in the 9th to grab the lead, but Smith came back with a deuce of her own to force the extra end, where Fullerton scored the winning single.

Fullerton beat Mary Myketyn Driscoll of Truro 7-4 in the semi-finals, while Smith got by Robyn Wile of CFB Halifax 6-4. All four rinks in the semis finished round robin play on Saturday with 4-1 win-loss records.

In the men’s division final, Summerside native Ramsay, whose team includes Matthew Nabuurs from Montague, Connor MacPhee from Charlottetown, and Shawn Pitre from the Alberton area, and is coached by Rob Roberts and Arnie Nabuurs, was tied at three-all after five ends of play against MacLean. Ramsay pulled ahead with a deuce in six, MacLean took a single in seven, and Ramsay scored a triple in end eight for an 8-4 lead and the game. Other members of the MacLean foursome are Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Allen MacLean, with coach Glen MacLean.

In the all-Island semi-finals, Ramsay beat Alex Matters of Charlottetown 8-5, while MacLean defeated Cornwall’s Jeffrey Taylor team 8-2. MacLean went undefeated in the round robin, with a 5-0 win-loss record, while the other three teams in the semis went 4-1.
