Cornwall’s Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke duo win Maritime Stick title

Stick Curling

The Cornwall Curling Club team of Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke captured the women’s division of the Maritime Stick Curling Championship at the Amherst Curling Club on Thursday by defeating the New Brunswick rink of Grace Donald and Diane Gallant. Also, in an earlier playoff game they scored a rare 6 ender. As there are only 6 rocks per end in stick curling, that is equivalent to scoring an 8 ender in regular curling. The Stavert-Clarke team also won the championship in 2010. The second PEI team of Audrey Callaghan and Janet Hackett were defeated in their semi-final game.

PEI teams also distinguished themselves in the open/men’s division as the Montague team of Floyd Stewart and Gordon MacDonald were runners-up after losing the final game to the Bennett-Duggan team from Nova Scotia. The two Cornwall teams of Charlie Campbell – Barry Craswell and Sterling Stratton – Ernie Stavert made the playoff round but were defeated in the quarter finals.

The 2013 Maritime Stick Championship will be hosted by the Montague Curling Club in mid-March. Each of the three provinces is represented by 4 open teams and 2 women’s teams for the three day event.
