PEI women end play at The Dominion with high-scoring shootout against Newfoundland and Labrador

The PEI men’s rink, skipped by Alan Inman from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and women’s team, captained by Nola Murphy of the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club have finished play at The Dominion Curling Club Championships in Scarborough Ont. with  1-5 and 2-4 win-loss records, respectively.

In the women’s final round robin draw last night, the highest scoring and most entertaining game was played between Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.  PE got off to a big start with 3, but NL came back to take the lead with 5.  The 4th end looked like the game changer when PE shot into a lead of 8-5.  NL, undaunted scored another 4.  When the score hit 9 to 8 for NL, the fans joked that the score board wasn’t long enough. The final score was 11-9 for PEI. [Editor’s note: the scoreboard and standings show an 11-9 win for PEI, but the written game report on The Dominion’s Facebook page indicates 11-9 for NL]

The teams to watch in the last draw were Ontario, who were undefeated, and Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Quebec who were all 4 wins and 1 loss in the standings.

Quebec played Nova Scotia, skipped by PEI native Marion MacAulay, in a big game for both teams. The first two ends went to Quebec but NS got on the board in the 3rd and followed it up with a 3 point boost in the 4th.  It was all tied up coming home in the 8th and it all came down to the last rock.  The Quebec skip, Sonia Simard, threw a take-out to win with a final score of 6-5.

The Ontario VS Saskatchewan was a nail biter, precision game.  It took Ontario until the 3rd end to get into the game and things got even more tense for the front-running team when SK tied it  up in the 4th.  The game saw three blank ends.  Ontario skip Caroline Deans who made the decisive shot with a great take-out and roll to the button to score 2 in the 7th end.  Ontario went on to win the game 6-2.

Manitoba dominated the score in their game against Alberta and went on to win 7 -2.

The New Brunswick VS Northwest Territories game was bck and forth, with each side scoring 1 in alternate ends.  Then NT took a late surge and went on to win the game 5 to 2.  This puts NT in the semi-final against Ontario – the first time NT has made it to the playoffs at The Dominion.

Advancing to today’s semi-finals are Manitoba VS Quebec and Ontario VS Northwest Territories.

The women’s final goes Sunday morning at 11:45 Atlantic.
