More info from the Maritime Stick Championship

The playoffs concluded on Thursday afternoon at the Maritime Stick Curling Championship at the Montague Curling Club, with two Nova Scotia teams in the Open division (men and mixed teams) championship game, and two Cornwall Curling Club (PEI) teams in the Women’s championship final.

Paul Doucet and Dave MacDougal from Yarmouth defeated Kerry Gardner and Ted Lohnes from Truro in the Open Division, while PEI Women’s Stick champions Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke defeated Shirley Lank and Mary Plamondon to win the women’s championship, making it three wins in the women’s event’s four year history for Stavert/Clarke. Cornwall was well represented in the championship round, with Roddie MacLean and Paul Field bowing out in the quarter finals,  and Willie Nicholson and Bryan Sutherland making it as far as the semi-final round.

PEI Open Division champions Walter Callaghan and John Vincent from Alberton won their round robin pool with a 5-0 win-loss record, but were eliminated in the quarter finals.

During the event, it was announced that Montague’s Bob Leard has retired from the Maritime Stick executive. Bob was instrumental in the organization of the Maritime Stick Championship six years ago and had served continuously on the Executive. Floyd Stewart from Montague has joined Cornwall’s Ernie Stavert as PEI’s representatives on the six member executive.
