Tyler Smith team 2-0 in U16, U21 best of 5 series tied, after Advantage Communications Junior Mixed opening day

Play got underway Friday at the Advantage Communications Junior Mixed Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. The Tyler Smith foursome from the Crapaud and Montague curling clubs lead the three team, double round robin Under 16 division, with a 2-0 win-loss record, followed by the James Dalton rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club and the Cornwall Curling Club at 1-1, and the Owen Collier team from Montague at 0-2. Smith beat Dalton 13-2 in their first round robin encounter, stealing five points in the opening end and four points in the 5th.

The two-team best three of five Under 21 competition will go to at least four games, as the opening day draws resulted in a one-all tie, with Cody Dixon and his Montague team taking two triples in a 7-4 win over Kyle Holland and his combined Charlottetown/Cornwall team, and Holland rebounding with a steal in the second end and a triple in the fifth in a 6-4 decision over Dixon.

Play continues Saturday with Collier taking on Dalton at 10 am, Smith playing Collier at 2 pm, and Smith and Dalton squaring off at 6:30 pm in the U16, while the two U21 teams square off at two and 6:30 pm.

If one team wins the next two games in the U21 and the Tyler Smith rink goes through the double round robin undefeated in the U16, play could wrap up with the 6:30 pm Saturday draw; otherwise, a U16 tiebreaker, if needed, would go at 8:30 am Sunday, and the last best of 5 Under 21 game, and/or the Under 16 final between the top two teams from the double round robin, would take place at 12 noon. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:15 pm Sunday.
