Gushue returns after frightening fall at Masters in Truro (Grand Slam)

(by Jonathan Brazeau)

TRURO, N.S. — Brad Gushue made an incredible return to his quarterfinal game at the Masters against Steve Laycock after a frightening fall that required a trip to the hospital for stitches on Saturday afternoon.

Gushue slipped and hit his head on the ice during the fourth end that brought a halt to play in all four games of the draw. Gushue required medical attention and was taken to a hospital where he received stitches as his three teammates continued to play.

However, the crowd roared during the seventh end as Gushue made a triumphant comeback and resumed skip duties for his team trailing 3-1.

Gushue got a single in the end but Laycock scored two in the final frame to win 5-2 and advance to the semifinals.

“Tough day at the office, for sure,” Gushue said after the game. “I don’t know what happened. I just fell and couldn’t get my arms underneath me and fell right on my face. Seven stitches, bad headache and sore neck. It’ll be rough tomorrow.”

With Gushue leaving in the fourth, lead Geoff Walker made the team’s last rock to the button with a perfect draw facing three counters for a single that tied the game 1-1.

Third Mark Nichols attempted an in-off with the team’s last shot in five but only got one and Laycock made an open draw for two. Nichols blanked the sixth.

It was Laycock’s second game of the day after he defeated Glenn Howard 6-3 in the morning tiebreaker to set up the quarterfinal match against the defending Masters champion.

“That was a pretty different situation out there,” Laycock said. “I’ve never been involved in a game where there’s been a serious injury like that. It was really tough to watch but it was great to see that he was able to come back and that it wasn’t more serious than it was.

“I was really proud of the guys and how we stayed focused through that because we continued to make good shots.”

Laycock now plays Jim Cotter, from Vernon, B.C., who trumped Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 8-1 to advance. Team Cotter took control of the game in the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie with a three-ender in five and added steals of one in six and three in seven to roll into the semis.

Cotter won the Tour Challenge Tier 2 event in September to earn a berth at the Masters, the first major of the 2015-16 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season.

Tour Challenge Tier 1`winner Kevin Koe of Calgary made an incredible final shot to score three in the last end and lift his Calgary team to a 7-5 victory over reigning world champion Niklas Edin of Sweden.

Koe will play Mike McEwen, who moved on with a 7-4 victory over Reid Carruthers in an all-Winnipeg rink matchup. McEwen made hit and sticks to score two in the first and three in the fourth. Carruthers got a single after a measurement in three and earned a deuce in five but McEwen matched with a pair in six. Carruthers was held to one in seven and shook hands.

The Masters is the second stop on the seven-event Pinty’s GSOC schedule and runs through to Sunday at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre. Women’s quarterfinals are set for 6 p.m. AT on Sportsnet.

Koe stole a point in the final end for a 5-4 victory over Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen, who was heavy on his draw to the button with his last rock coming home.

Team Koe, who won the Tour Challenge Tier 1 event, goes up against reigning world champion Niklas Edin (2-2) in the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon (Watch on CBC at Noon ET / 9 a.m PT). McEwen (3-1) meets Reid Carruthers (3-1) in an all-Winnipeg rink match.

Meanwhile, Gushue defeated Scotland’s David Murdoch 7-3. It was a back-and-forth affair to start as the teams alternated deuces in two and three and singles through four and five. Team Gushue, the defending Masters champions, got another two in six and stole a pair in seven that led to handshakes.

Team Murdoch, the 2014 Sochi Olympic silver medallists, finished with a 1-3 record in the round robin.

Elsewhere, reigning Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., scored three in the seventh and ran Jim Cotter, from Vernon, B.C., out of rocks in eight to win 6-3. Both teams advance with 3-1 records and will face off again in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Team Cotter won the Tour Challenge Tier 2 event in September to earn a berth at the Masters.

Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock bounced back to finish the round robin at 2-2 and move on with a 7-1 victory in six ends over two-time reigning Brier champion Pat Simmons of Calgary.

Laycock opened with a deuce in the first end, held Simmons to one in three and then pulled away scoring three in the fourth. Simmons struggled and hit guards with his final shots in five and six to give up single steals.

Simmons, the 2012 Masters champion, is out with a 1-3 record.

Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., charged back to win 8-4 over Toronto’s John Epping. Howard, a six-time Masters champion, gave up steals in three and four to trail 3-1 and rebounded with a three-ender in five. Epping settled for a single in six and Howard completed the comeback scoring four in seven. Howard stays in the mix with a 2-2 record while Epping ends at 1-3.

Laycock and Howard will play in a tiebreaker Saturday morning at 9 a.m. AT with the winner facing Gushue in the quarters.

Women’s event

TRURO, N.S. — Ottawa’s Rachel Homan finished the round robin of the Masters with a perfect record following a 6-2 win over EunJung Kim of South Korea in Draw 13 Friday night.

Team Homan led 2-1 at the fourth-end break and scored four in the fifth to pull away. Homan made a double takeout with her last throw in six to force Kim to just a single and the teams shook hands.

“I think we just came out strong tonight,” said Team Homan third Emma Miskew. “It’s nice to not have really any pressure. We knew we were in the playoffs and this was just another game to learn the ice a little bit more before heading into the playoffs. So we just went out a little bit more relaxed and it was fun.”

Homan now holds a 4-0 record as she looks to win her third Masters title in four seasons.

Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald edged reigning Masters champion Val Sweeting of Edmonton with a single in the eighth to win 4-3. Both teams move on with 3-1 records.

Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones (2-2) came back from a late five-point deficit but couldn’t get the steal in the extra end to fall 7-6 to Anna Sidorova (3-1) of Russia.

Sidorova opened with hammer, took one in the first and stole singles in two and three and a pair in four. Jones could only get one in the fifth and Sidorova added a point in six on a call that was too close to call for the measuring stick. Jones narrowed the gap with a three-ender in seven and stole two in seven to tie it.

Jones and Kim clash in a tiebreaker Saturday morning at 9 a.m. AT (admission is free) for the final playoff spot against Homan.

Edin holds a 2-1 record in the round robin.

Tour Challenge Tier 1 winner Kevin Koe also qualified after defeating Halifax’s Shawn Adams 6-2. Koe, of Calgary, climbed to a 3-0 record while Adams dropped to 0-3.

Reigning Olympic Brad Jacobs earned a 6-3 victory over Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton. Jacobs, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., moved up to a 2-1 record and Bottcher fell to 1-2.

Team Arsenault, the sponsor’s exemption at the Masters, improved to a 2-1 record to stay in the mix.

McEwen makes sensational shot to climb to 2-0, tied with Gushue at Masters in Truro

(by Jonathan Brazeau)

TRURO, N.S. — Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen jumped out to a 2-0 record at the Pinty’s GSOC Masters thanks to a sensational shot to score four in the final end and lift his team past Halifax’s Shawn Adams on Wednesday night.

mcewenmasters

Down by one coming home, McEwen nailed the takeout with his last rock to erase three counters and get the four-ender for the 7-4 victory.

“Thank God I have good sweepers,” McEwen said with a sigh of relief. “I threw it kind of how I wanted to. I was really fortunate the guys made a hell of a lot of shots in front of me to give me a shot to win. I threw it pretty good and the guys had a go on it but wow did they play a really good end in front of me to set that up.

“Pretty nice to finish off a game like that because Adams played pretty well too so that was a battle.”

McEwen swept past Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock 7-1 in the early afternoon draw.

Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Rachel Homan also picked up a pair of wins Wednesday to start off strong out of the gate in her quest to win her third Masters championship in four years.

Homan defeated Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 5-3 in a rematch of last month’s Tour Challenge Tier 1 final.

Team Homan scored a deuce in the sixth end to take a 4-3 lead, Tirinzoni blanked the seventh to hold the hammer coming home but gave up a steal of one in the final frame.

“It’s a great way to start and we’re getting to learn the ice,” said Team Homan second Joanne Courtney. “The surface is great, we’re just trying to learn the ice and the rocks and put some shots together so we’re really happy with the result today.”

Homan defeated Tracy Fleury, of Sudbury, Ont., 7-2 during the early afternoon draw. Team Tirinzoni, who earned their first career Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title by winning the Tour Challenge, are now 1-1 in the round robin portion of the Masters.

Brad Gushue of St. John’s [with PEI native Brett Gallant at second stone] joined McEwen at the top of the men’s leaderboard, also improving to 2-0 with a 6-3 win over Glenn Howard, of Penetanguishene, Ont., during Draw 5.

Gushue broke a 2-2 tie with a deuce in three and stole a point in five to lead by three. The two teams alternated singles through the sixth and seventh ends and Gushue ran Howard out of rocks in eight.

Elsewhere, Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers edged Brad Jacobs, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 7-6 after making an open hit to score one in the extra end. Both teams are even with 1-1 records.

Scotland’s Eve Muirhead also won a close one scoring a single in the eighth to beat Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald 5-4. Both teams are now at 1-1.

Simmons, Gushue open GSOC Masters in Truro with wins (Grand Slam)

(by Jonathan Brazeau)

TRURO, N.S. — Reigning Brier champion Pat Simmons won his Pinty’s GSOC season debut with a 7-3 victory over Shawn Adams in the opening draw of the Masters on Tuesday night.

simmons_pat_1280-640x360

Things did not start out right for Team Simmons as they trailed 2-1 through two ends of play. Simmons attempted an angle raise to bump out Adams’s shot stone in the second, but he wasn’t able to knock it off the button. Adams, of Halifax, capitalized with his last rock to get the deuce.

Simmons rebounded grabbing a point in the third and stole one in the fourth to go up 3-2 at the break. Adams got one in the fifth to tie it back up, but Simmons countered with a single in six and stole a point in seven.

Team Simmons, of Calgary, added another steal taking two in the eighth to ice the match.

Lead Nolan Thiessen admitted the team got out to a slow start in the game.

“They made a couple of really good ones to force us, then made a nice shot and they got a deuce there,” Thiessen said. “We struggled a little bit early there but kept plugging away and found a way to make a few more shots in the second half and get the win.”

Team Simmons were absent from the past three Pinty’s GSOC events. The team did not qualify for the Syncrude Elite 10 and the Players’ Championship last year and skipped the season-opening Tour Challenge. Thiessen said they love competing in these events and it’s great to be back.

“It’s the best teams, it’s amazing ice, and it’s a true test of where you’re at as a team so we were excited to get out here and really see where we’re at,” Thiessen said. “Hopefully we can win a few games at the Slams unlike last year so we can stick around for the whole year.”

Team Simmons plan to donate a portion of their Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling prize money this season to Wounded Warriors Canada.

Elsewhere in men’s action, Brad Gushue of St. John’s scored a 4-2 victory over Toronto’s John Epping. Team Gushue, who have won four titles on tour this season, were forced to a single in the second but doubled their lead stealing a point in the third. Epping was held to one in the fourth and Gushue countered in five and stole again in six to go ahead 4-1. Team Epping got another single in seven.

Meanwhile in the women’s division, Kerri Einarson of Winnipeg stunned Scotland’s Eve Muirhead with a 7-6 victory. Einarson trailed 3-0 after two ends and bounced back with a deuce in three and a steal of two in four. Muirhead, the reigning Rogers Grand Slam Cup champion, was held to one in the fifth and Einarson added a three-ender in six to regain the lead 7-4. Team Muirhead got points in seven and eight but Einarson prevailed.

Team Einarson qualified for the Masters after winning the Tour Challenge Tier 2 in September.

Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland held on for a 7-6 win over Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden. Tirizoni, the Tour Challenge Tier 1 winner, erased a three-point deficit and jumped ahead scoring four in the third, stealing two in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead 7-3. Sigfridsson almost came back with a point in six and single steals in seven and eight.

Two-time world champion Mary-Anne Arsenault of Halifax scored one in the seventh and stole a point in eight to lift her team to a 5-3 win over Russia’s Anna Sidorova.
