The Tyler Smith rink from the Montague and Crapaud curling clubs beat the Matthew MacLean foursome from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf curling clubs by an 11-3 score this morning to capture the Pepsi Provincial Men’s Curling Championship at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Along with the women’s winners, the Veronica Smith (no relation) rink, they now advance to the  M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL. It’s the second provincial juniors title for Tyler Smith, who, playing with a different team, also won the event in January 2013. This year’s rink are also competing in the Canada Games in Prince George BC in February.

Smith, who won two sections of the modified triple knockout round, had two chances to win the championship today against the MacLean foursome, who would have had to win both games, but the rink only needed the first game, getting on the scoreboard with a deuce in the first end, MacLean was kept to a single in the second, with Smith taking singles in the next two ends, and stealing a triple to take a commanding 7-1 lead after five ends. MacLean picked up a single in end six, and stole another in the seventh to make it 7-3, but a four-pointer from Smith in eight brought the game to handshakes.

Other members of the Smith foursome are third Brooks Roche, second Dylan Lowery, and lead Ryan Lowery. They are coached by Tyler’s father, Kevin Smith. Rounding out the runner-up MacLean team are Alan and Jordan MacLean at third and second, respectively, and lead Noah O’Connor, with coach Glen MacLean.

The winners of the Fair Play (sportsmanship) award as voted on by the players, and the Asham Coaching Award as voted on by the coaches, were announced at the closing ceremonies, with the men’s Fair Play award going to skip Leslie Noye from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and the Coaching award going to Roger Gavin, who coached the Noye rink (photos not available).

Six junior men’s rinks and an equal number of junior women’s teams took part in the Pepsi Juniors.

The Cornwall Curling Club rink of Veronica Smith, Chloé McCloskey, Sabrina Smith, and Katie Fullerton, with coach Bill Hope, are now three-time winners of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s Curling Championship, going undefeated in this year’s event, and beating the Jane DiCarlo team from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex by a 6-3 score in the C event final this evening. As the Smith team won all three section finals of the modified triple knockout round, all against DiCarlo, the two game championship round on Wednesday is not required, and the Smith team will now advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 24 – February 1, 2015 in Cornerbrook NL.

This will be Veronica’s final trip to the Junior Nationals, as she will be out of the age category next year, but her three teammates will still be eligible. Other members of the runner-up DiCarlo foursome are Jessica Watts, Emily Gray, and Megan Wile, with alternate Robyn Wile, and coach Lori Robinson.

Meanwhile, Tyler Smith and his rink from the Montague and Crapaud curling clubs doubled the Alex MacFadyen foursome from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club by an 8-4 score tonight to capture the men’s C event. Smith was ahead 4-3 after five ends, and then stole singles in the next two ends and recorded a deuce in the ninth en route to the win. The Smith rink also won the B section of the modified triple knockout, and will advance to both championship round games on Wednesday, at 9 am and 2 pm, and will win the championship if they take either game. The other team to advance to the championship round, the A section winning Matthew MacLean foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club and O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club must win both games tomorrow in order to win the championship.

Rounding out the Smith team, who are PEI’s Canada Games men’s representatives in February, are Brooks Roche, Dylan Lowery, and Ryan Lowery, with coach Kevin Smith. Completing the MacLean rink are Alan and Jordan MacLean, along with Noah O’Connor and coach Glen MacLean.

Alex MacFadyen and his team from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club stole a pair of deuces in ends seven and eight in a 9-4 win over the Matthew MacLean rink from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf curling clubs this afternoon, to advance to the 7 pm C event final against Tyler Smith from the Crapaud and Montague curling clubs. Smith won the B event on Monday, while MacLean took the A event on Sunday.

If Smith wins tonight, he would play in both championship games on Wednesday, and win the event if he takes either game, while his opponent, MacLean, would have to win both games. If MacFadyen wins tonight, he would play MacLean in the morning game, with the winner facing Smith at 2 pm (the rules specify that the team who played in the most section qualifier games would have the bye to the second game, and Smith was in all three qualifiers).

The B qualifiers have now been determined following Monday evening play at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, with two-time defending champion Veronica Smith from the Cornwall Curling Club winning the women’s B event, and Tyler Smith (no relation) and his Crapaud and Montague rink winning the men’s.

Veronica Smith stole four points in the sixth end on the way to an 8-6 win over Charlottetown’s Jane DiCarlo rink in the women’s B qualifier. Smith had previously won the A section of the modified triple knockout, and is now just one win away from taking the championship. If Smith also wins the C qualifier at 7 pm Tuesday, she would immediately be declared the champion and the Wednesday championship round would not be needed. If she doesn’t win that game, she will take the championship if she wins either game on Wednesday, while the winner of the C event would have to win both games.

Tyler Smith won the men’s B event with a 7-5 come-from-behind win over Matthew MacLean and his rink from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf clubs. Smith was trailing 5-4 after eight ends, after MacLean stole singles in ends three through five, but stole a deuce in the 9th and a single in the final end for the win. MacLean had previously won the A event.

Two more teams were eliminated from play this evening, with Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside knocking out Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe rink with an 11-5 victory, in a game that ended early when MacFadyen picked up five points in the eighth end. On the women’s side, Cornwall’s Jenny McLean stayed alive with a 9-1 win over Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike rink in six ends.

In Tuesday “C” semi-final play at 2 pm, Matthew MacLean takes on Alex MacFadyen, and Jenny McLean faces Jane DiCarlo, with the winners playing Tyler and Veronica Smith, respectively, in the C qualifier game at 7 pm.

The two game championship round is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 am and 2 pm.

The B section qualifier games at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships go tonight at 7 at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Tyler Smith and his Montague and Crapaud rink beat Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe team 7-3, while Jane DiCarlo defeated Charlottetown clubmate 10-2 in the B semi-finals this afternoon to advance to the men’s and women’s B qualifier games against A section winners Matthew MacLean from the Cornwall and Maple Leaf clubs and Veronica Smith from Cornwall.

Two teams — the Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall and the Leslie Noye foursome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, were eliminated from play this afternoon, with losses in the C flight, to Cornwall’s Jenny McLean and Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, respectively.

Besides the Smith/DiCarlo and Smith/MacLean games tonight, down in the “must win” C flight, MacFadyen and DeWolfe square off in the men’s section, while McLean takes on Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike team in the women’s. The C semis go Tuesday at 2 pm, with the C qualifers following at 7.

There were some close games in the Sunday evening draw at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Earlier in the day, the first of three qualifying spots for Wednesday’s championship round was determined, with Matthew MacLean and his Cornwall/Maple Leaf rink winning the Men’s A qualifier, and two-time defending Veronica Smith taking the Women’s.

On Sunday evening in B section play, Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe rink was leading 4-3 coming home without last rock advantage in his game against Alex MacFadyen from the Silver Fox, but pulled off a steal of five points in the last end for a 9-3 win to advance to the B semi-final against A qualifier runner-up Tyler Smith from Crapaud and Montague. The winner of that game, at 2 pm Monday, faces Matthew MacLean in the B qualifier game at 7 pm Monday.

In the women’s B section, Lauren Moerike from the host club stole 4 in the last end to defeat Lauren Lenentine 11-7 to go to the B semi at 2 pm Monday against clubmate Jane DiCarlo, who was runner-up to Veronica Smith in the A qualifier. The winner of the B semi takes on Smith at 7 pm Monday in the B qualifier.

Two teams have now been eliminated from play in the “must-win” C flight, after suffering their third loss, with Cornwall’s Devin Schut losing 11-5 to Alberton’s Leslie Noye, and Kaleigh Mackay and her Crapaud and Montague team losing 7-6 in an extra end to Cornwall’s Jenny McLean. McLean takes on Lenentine, while Noye faces MacFadyen at 2 pm on Monday, with the losers going home and the winners advancing to the 7 pm draw. The C semi goes Tuesday at 2 pm with the C qualifier following at 7 pm.

The two game championship round goes Wednesday at 9 am and, if needed, 2 pm. If either Matthew MacLean of Veronica Smith wins all three sections of the modified triple knockout, their championship round won’t be required.

MacLean stole a single point in the extra end to win his qualifier game against Canada Games contender Tyler Smith and his Crapaud and Montague team by a 9-8 score, while Veronica Smith, trailing 5-4 coming home in her game against Jane DiCarlo from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, picked up a triple in the 10th end for a 7-5 win. In the modified triple knockout format of this event, the A qualifiers remain in the draw, and have the opportunity to also win the B and/or C divisions. If either MacLean or Smith win all three sections, they will be declared the champions without the championship round. If a team wins two of the three sections, they will play in both championship round games, and take the championship if they win either, while their opponent would have to win both games. If there are three separate winners, the team who plays in the most qualifying games gets the bye to the second game.

Matthew MacLean and Veronica Smith receive berths in the B finals, at 7 pm Monday, and will face the winners of the B semi-finals at 2 pm Monday. The men’s B semi will be between Tyler Smith and the winner of the 7 pm Sunday game between the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe team. The women’s B semi sees DiCarlo take on the winner of the 7 pm Sunday contest between Lauren Lenentine of Cornwall and Lauren Moerike of Charlottetown.

Going into the 7 pm Sunday draw, two men’s rinks, skipped by Devin Schut of Cornwall and Leslie Noye of the Western Community Curling Club have two losses, and are down in the must-win C division, while the Jenny McLean rink from Cornwall and the Kaleigh Mackay team from Crapaud and Montague are in the same situation on the women’s side.

The C semi-finals are 2 pm on Tuesday with the C qualifier games following at 7. The championship round, if needed, goes Monday at 9 am, and, if necessary, 2 pm. 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams are in the Pepsi Juniors.
