CALGARY — Sarah Fullerton and her P.E.I. rink halted a losing skid at the Canadian junior curling championships Monday with a win over Northern Ontario.
The win improved the team’s record to 3-3 after six draws in Calgary.
Fullerton and her rink of Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young took out Northern Ontario by a 10-6 count, to end a three-game losing streak.
On the junior men’s side, Spencer Pitre and his team of Matthew Nabuurs, Eric Pidgeon, and Connor MacPhee from Charlottetown dropped to 1-5 after the first six draws.
Monday, the team, which is competing in its first national event, lost to Northern Ontario, 8-6. Sunday night, Saskatchewan cruised to a 12-3 victory over the Island squad.
“Going forward, we have to remember that regardless of our record, we are not playing badly,” MacPhee said. “We had some tough luck and the bounces have not been going our way so far, but we know that we are a good team and if we continue to play steadily and be patient, the breaks will come our way.”
After spending the night in hospital when he collapsed on the ice, Pidgeon was back at the rink Monday.
He didn’t play, but after going through a series of tests and recovering from issues stemming from fatigue and altitude for a day, he is expected to be back in action today.
