Gold and silver for Canada’s Maritime teams at the World Seniors (CCA)

(by Jean Mills)

It’s a gold medal repeat for Canadian men at the 2014 World Senior Curling Championships as Wayne Tallon capped off a perfect week, finishing on the top of the podium at the Ice Bowl in Dumfries, Scotland, on Wednesday morning.

Tallon and his Fredericton, N.B., team of third Mike Kennedy, second Mike Flannery, lead Wade Blanchard, alternate Charles Kingston and coach Bill Tschirhart controlled the game from the outset to win the men’s final 7-2 over Sweden’s Connie Oestlund and bring home Canada’s ninth senior men’s world title.

“I’m just lost for words. Really ecstatic about it,” said Tallon after the game.  ”I’m really happy at how the boys played, they played really hard, so it feels good.”

“We were patient. We were trying to score soft deuces without too much risk and we were able to do that – textbook curling – take two and give up one, take two and give up one,” he said. “That was the plan, that was the way we executed it and that’s the way it turned out.”

Tallon said the win was even more special after having been involved in the championship last year (as Chair of the World Curling Championships 2013 held in Fredericton, N.B.).

“Last year my responsibility was to ensure everybody had a good time,” he said. “This year it was to make sure that everyone played well and we kept the team unit together an focused. I think we showed that in every single game we played in this week.”

In the women’s final, Pinkney and her team of third Wendy Currie, second Shelley MacNutt, lead Susan Creelman, alternate Judy Burgess and coach Bill Tschirhart lost 6-5 to Scotland’s Christine Cannon in a close battle. Trailing 5-4 after seven, Cannon stole two in the final end to claim the gold in front of a hometown crowd.

“We are very disappointed right now but will be happy in a couple of hours,” said Pinkney. “Basically the key was that Scotland had two great last ends and we’ve missed a couple of shots that we couldn’t afford.”

Pinkney was hoping to win Canada’s seventh consecutive gold medal, and her second — Pinkney, Currie and Creelman (Karen Hennigar played second) went unbeaten to win gold in 2010 at Chelyabinsk, Russia. Canada has won nine times since the World Seniors were introduced in 2002.

Both Canadian men’s and women’s teams went undefeated throughout the round robin. Pinkney earned a spot in the semifinal by virtue of her first-place pool finish, but Tallon had to qualify for the semifinal by defeating Scotland’s Keith Prentice 6-5 in the men’s quarterfinals on Tuesday.

In the semifinals, Tallon defeated USA’ s Jeff Wright 5-4, while Pinkney won 6-5 over Sweden’s Ingrid Meldahl.

At the 2013 event in Fredericton (which was chaired by Tallon), Rob Armitage of Red Deer, Alta., won the men’s gold medal while Cathy King of Edmonton captured the women’s gold. Both of the Canadian teams at the 2014 World Seniors qualified for the trip to Scotland by winning their respective titles at the 2013 Canadian Senior Men’s and Curling Championships in Summerside, P.E.I.

Semifinals for Tallon and Pinkney at World Seniors (CCA)

(by Jean Mills) Both Wayne Tallon and Colleen Pinkney have qualified for Wednesday’s semifinals at the 2014 World Senior Curling Championships in Dumfries, Scotland. Pinkney earned her spot by virtue of her first-place finish in pool play with an undefeated record, but Tallon had to win a tense quarter-final battle over home team Scotland to advance.

Pinkney and her team of third Wendy Currie, second Shelley MacNutt, lead Susan Creelman, alternate Judy Burgess and coach Bill Tschirhart powered their way to a 13-2 win over Russia’s Ludmila Murova in their last game of the round robin to earn top spot in the standings and a trip to the playoffs.

Canada scored four points to start the game, then stole the next two ends to lead 9-0 after three. The Russians managed to score singles with hammer, but conceded after six ends.

The Canadian skip from Truro, N.S., acknowledged that going unbeaten and earning an easy win against Russia is a confidence-builder, but she’s taking nothing for granted.

“You never know what will happen in curling,” she said, looking ahead to the semifinal against Scotland’s Christine Cannon. “We still have to come with our A-game. The other teams in the other sections are also gaining momentum, so we certainly won’t be going in over-confident. You have to expect the best from everybody.”

On Tuesday morning at the Dumfries Ice Bowl, Tallon and his Fredericton, N.B., team of third Mike Kennedy, second Mike Flannery, lead Wade Blanchard, alternate Charles Kingston and coach Bill Tschirhart dominated Germany’s Rainer Schoepp, stealing four points in the sixth end to go up 9-2 and put the game away.

With the win, Tallon finished the round robin with an 8-0 record – the only undefeated team in the 25-team men’s competition – and progressed to the quarter-final on Tuesday evening against Scotland’s Keith Prentice (5-2).

In a tight game, Canada trailed 5-4 after seven, but scored two with hammer to secure the 6-5 win – and ensure a semifinal berth.

On April 30, the senior men’s and women’s gold-medal and bronze-medal games are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Atlantic

Pinkney, with her team of third Wendy Currie, second Shelley MacNutt, lead Susan Creelman, alternate Judy Burgess and coach Bill Tschirhart, defeated Switzerland’s Susan Limena 8-3 on Monday afternoon.

Both teams came into the game tied in the standings at 4-0, and the game was close for five ends. Leading 3-2 in the sixth, Pinkney scored five points to put the game out of reach.

Despite the winning record, Pinkney is taking nothing for granted and says her team continues to work at finding their comfort zone.

“We felt better in this game,” she said after the win over Switzerland. “I think with every game we are starting to catch onto the ice and the conditions better, which I must say are amazing. The ice is very consistent so we are playing with confidence.”

Wayne Tallon and his Fredericton, N.B., team of third Mike Kennedy, second Mike Flannery, lead Wade Blanchard, alternate Charles Kingston and coach Bill Tschirhart are now 7-0, the only team in the men’s competition with an undefeated record.

Tallon battled to a 6-5 win over Japan’s Masayasu Sato on Monday morning. Japan opened scoring with a steal of one, but Canada put the pressure on and led 5-3 heading in the seventh. After scoring a single in the seventh, Masayasu was able to steal one more in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough to force the extra end, and Canada walked away with the win.

The round robin wraps up on Tuesday morning, with Pinkney (5-0) playing Russia’s Ludmila Murova (0-5) and Tallon (7-0) taking on Germany’s Rainer Schoepp (4-2).

The round-robin draws for the World Seniors will run through to April 29 before the playoffs get underway. There are 25 senior men’s teams, split into three pools (one nine-team pool, two eight-team pools); 15 senior women’s teams, split into two pools (one eight-team pool, one seven-team pool).

On April 30, the senior men’s and women’s gold-medal and bronze-medal games are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Atlantic.

Colleen Pinkney, of Truro, N.S., is now tied with Switzerland’s Susan Limena 4-0 at the top of the women’s B Group after scoring two decisive wins on Sunday.

Against Finland’s Kirsti Kauste, Pinkney, with her team of third Wendy Currie, second Shelley MacNutt, lead Susan Creelman, alternate Judy Burgess and coach Bill Tschirhart, opened the scoring by stealing four points in the first end, and followed that with stolen deuces in the fourth and fifth on the way to a 9-3 victory.

The Canadian women continued their winning streak against Australia’s Sandy Gagnon in the evening game. A series of deuces gave Canada a 6-0 lead after three ends. Gagnon managed to score with hammer, but Pinkney kept the pressure on with triples in the fifth and seventh ends on the way to a 12-3 win.

On the men’s side, Wayne Tallon and his Fredericton, N.B., team of third Mike Kennedy, second Mike Flannery, lead Wade Blanchard, alternate Charles Kingston and coach Bill Tschirhart won a close contest over Australia’s Hugh Millikin, 4-2. With the win, Tallon takes sole possession of first place in the men’s A Group with a 6-0 record.

Both Canadian men’s and women’s teams will play only one game on Monday. Tallon will face Japan’s Masayasu Sato (1-4) and Pinkney will take on Switzerland’s Limena (4-0).

Fredericton’s Tallon remains undefeated at World Seniors, Truro’s Pinkney has Sat. off (CCA)

(by Jean Mills) Wayne Tallon added two more wins on Saturday to remain undefeated in the round robin at the 2014 World Senior Curling Championships in Dumfries, Scotland.

Tallon and his Fredericton, N.B., team of third Mike Kennedy, second Mike Flannery, lead Wade Blanchard, alternate Charles Kingston and coach Bill Tschirhart started the day with a close 5-4 victory over Norway’s Tormod Andreassen. Trailing 4-3 after six, the Canadians blanked the seventh and were able to score their deuce in the eighth for the win.

Tallon had an easier game against Latvia’s P?teris Šveisbergs in Saturday’s final draw. Steals in the fourth and fifth ends put Canada ahead 5-1. Although Šveisbergs scored his deuce in the sixth, Canada hit out for the 6-3 win.

The Canadian men now sit at the top of the leaderboard in their pool with a 5-0 record, followed by Australia, also undefeated at 4-0, and Norway with a 4-1 record. On Sunday, the Canadian men will meet the only other undefeated team in their pool, Australia, skipped by former Canadian Hugh Millikin.

The Canadian senior women led by Colleen Pinkney of Truro, N.S., (third Wendy Currie, second Shelley MacNutt, lead Susan Creelman, alternate Judy Burgess and coach Bill Tschirhart) had the day off and will face Finland’s Kirsti Kauste and Australia’s Sandy Gagnon on Sunday as the round robin continues.

A winning day for Canada’s teams (from NB and NS) at World Seniors (CCA)

(by Jean Mills) Wayne Tallon and Colleen Pinkney remain undefeated in their respective pools at the World Senior Curling Championships in Dumfries, Scotland, after both teams earned lopsided victories on the second day of the round robin.

On Friday afternoon, Tallon and his Fredericton, N.B., team of third Mike Kennedy, second Mike Flannery, lead Wade Blanchard, alternate Charles Kingston and coach Bill Tschirhart kicked off their game against Slovakia’s Peter Mocek with five points in the first end, and stole a single in the second on the way to a 12-2 win.

In the evening game, the Canadian men stole the first three ends, racking up an early 7-0 score in a 13-1 victory over Poland’s Andrzej Janowski.

“We were able to adapt to the ice conditions,” said Tallon after the first game of the day. “This was the biggest contributing factor to our victory today.”

Pinkney and her team from Truro, N.S., (third Wendy Currie, second Shelley MacNutt, lead Susan Creelman, alternate Judy Burgess and coach Bill Tschirhart) faced Italy’s Fiona Simpson in a game that was tight for the first four ends.

After blanking the first end, Pinkney scored one and stole one before Italy was able to get on the board. A huge score of five points in the fifth end put Canada ahead, and the Italians were able to score only one more point before conceding a 7-2 Canadian victory.

Pinkney will face Finland’s Kirsti Kauste and Australia’s Sandy Gagnon on Saturday as the round robin continues. On the men’s side, Tallon and crew will take on Norway’s Tormod Andreassen and Latvia’s P?teris Šveisbergs.

Tallon offered kudos to the event organization, something he knows about, having been the host committee executive director for the 2013 championship held in his hometown of Fredericton, N.B.

“By the way, the ice is perfect,” he said about game conditions at the Dumfries Ice Bowl. “The organizers have done everything perfectly. They came to Canada last year, got a couple of tips and they made a perfect tournament here. The venue is absolutely perfect.”

Wayne Middaugh caps off competitive curling career with enjoyable weekend in PEI (Midland Mirror)

MIDLAND – With world championships in 1993, 1998 and 2012, plus three Brier titles and countless Grand Slam wins on his curling resumé, Victoria Harbour resident Wayne Middaugh has decided it’s time to focus more on family life.

Wayne Middaugh announced he is stepping away from the elite curling scene to focus more on family life. He won’t be putting away the broom for good, however, as he still intends to play charity events and in the Major Curling League in Penetanguishene.

Last weekend in Prince Edward Island, the 46-year-old Brampton native capped off his career, competing in the season-ending Players’ Championship with his Penetanguishene Curling Club team of Glenn Howard, Brent Laing and Craig Savill.

It wasn’t the ending the team would have liked, as they compiled a 1-4 record and missed the playoffs.

“It was a great feeling in P.E.I. to play there, and the response was great from not only the spectators, but the competitors, as well,” said Middaugh. “They gave our team a great ovation, and it’s great to know they appreciate how much we put into the game and how our competitors respect us as players.”

Having decided he would be leaving the team some time ago, Middaugh said he wanted to keep things fun and enjoyable in P.E.I.

“I was going out and trying to enjoy everything the Players’ Championship has to offer. We were spoiled the whole time there, including a big lobster dinner,” he said.
