The Moerike team, with 3rd Ashley Gallant, 2nd Annika Kelly, and lead Tati Kelly, with coach Angela Hodgson, forced the deciding game in the best of three series with a 9-6 come-from-behind win Saturday afternoon. The Mackay foursome won the 1st game in the series on Saturday morning, by an 11-3 score.

In the first half of today’s final game, Mackay took singles in the first two ends, and a deuce in the fourth, while Moerike recorded singles in ends three and five to trail 4-2. MacKay took a single in end six, but Moerike tied the game at five-all with a deuce in seven and a stolen single in eight. Moerike came back with a single in nine to lead 6-5 coming home without last rock advantage. She managed to steal a single in the final end for the 7-5 win.

The Kaleigh Mackay and Tyler Smith rinks will represent PEI at the Canada Winter Games, in Prince George BC from February 13—March 1, 2015, with the men’s curling event taking place during Week 1 (Feb. 13-21) and the women’s event being held Week 2 (Feb. 21-Mar. 1).

SUMMERSIDE – The Kaleigh Mackay rink will wear P.E.I.’s green and white colours on the national stage in February.

MacKay, who is from Bedeque, third stone Danielle Collings, second stone Alyssa Wright of Kinkora, lead Kaleigh Peters and coach AJ Campbell earned the right to represent P.E.I. in women’s curling at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.
“When we got together (two years ago), it was our plan to go for that,” said Mackay. “It was our main goal from the start.”

Skip Kaleigh Mackay calls a shot during Saturday afternoon’s play in the P.E.I. Canada Games women’s curling trials at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Mackay will represent P.E.I. at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C., in February.

It wasn’t an easy road for the Mackay rink, which plays out of the Crapaud and Montague clubs. Mackay and Lauren Moerike’s Charlottetown Curling Complex rink, also consisting of third stone Ashley Gallant, second stone Annika Kelly and lead Tati Kelly, went the distance in the best-of-three trials final series.

And the deciding game came right down to the wire. Moerike went into the 10th end trailing 6-5 with the hammer, but Mackay was able to steal one for a 7-5 victory.

Field nearly set for Ford World Men’s in Halifax (CCA)-tickets on sale now!

(by Al Cameron)

Eleven of the 12 countries that will contest the 2015 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship next spring at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax have now been determined.

Eight more countries were added to the 12-team field that will compete for the world title from March 28 to April 5 following the 2014 Le Gruyère European Championships, which concluded on Saturday in Champéry, Switzerland.

Sweden’s Niklas Edin, the 2013 winner at the Ford World Men’s in Victoria, B.C., defeated reigning world men’s champion Thomas Ulsrud of Norway 5-4 in an extra end in Saturday’s gold-medal game to cap an unbeaten run through the championship, while Switzerland’s Sven Michel captured the bronze medal with an 8-6 triumph over Italy’s Joel Retornaz.

All four countries qualified for the Ford Worlds, as did the next three highest finishers in the round robin — Ji?í Snítil of the Czech Republic, Russia’s Evgeny Arkhipov and Scotland’s David Edwards.

The eighth European entry was decided following a best-of-three playoff between A-pool eighth-place finisher Alexander Baumann of Germany and Aku Kauste of Finland, who won the B-pool in Champéry. The Finns swept the two-game series to clinch a trip to Halifax.

The teams that competed in Champéry aren’t guaranteed to play in Halifax; each qualified country will determine its representative team for the Ford Worlds in the new year.

The Italians will be making their first trip to the World Men’s Championship since 2010, and just their fourth since 1990.

As the host country, Canada was the first qualified country, and was joined by China and Japan — the top two finishers at the Pacific-Asia Championships earlier this month in Karuizawa, Japan.

The 12th qualifier for the Ford Worlds in Halifax will be determined through a best-of-five challenge series for the second Americas Zone berth between Brazil and the United States, beginning Jan. 30 in Blaine, Minn. Brazil has challenged the U.S. on two previous occasions, in 2009 and 2010, and was swept in three games both times.

Canada’s representative for the Ford Worlds will be decided at the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, Feb. 28-March 8 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Various ticket options for the 2015 Ford Worlds in Halifax are now available. Look for ways to “Live it Live” at the Ford Worlds by going to www.curling.ca/2015worldmen-en/tickets/.

“It feels better than the first one,” said Smith, who is heading back with a completely different team that was put together at the start of last season and calls the Montague Curling Club home. “Not too many people go twice, so that is what makes it so special.”

Smith, 16; third stone Brooks Roche, 17; second stone Dylan Lowery, 17, and lead Ryan Lowery, 14, swept the best-of-three series between the two Canada Games men’s training teams on Saturday to earn the right to represent P.E.I. in Prince George, B.C., in February 2015.

MacFadyen was unable to play this weekend due to illness, so third James Dalton moved up to skip, with their alternate, Alberton’s Leslie Noye. filling in at third. Matthew MacDonald plays second, and Parker MacFadyen throws lead stone for the team, which is coached by David MacFadyen.  The Smith team won the first game 12-4 this morning, and took their 2nd game this afternoon by a 8-3 score, making a third game unnecessary. After blanking the first end this afternoon, the Smith team scored singles in ends 2 and 3. The MacFadyen rink scored a single in the 4th, with Smith blanking the 5th and recording a triple in the sixth, to lead 5-1. Team MacFadyen narrowed the gap to two points with a pair of singles, but a Smith triple in 9 brought the game to a speedy conclusion.

Meanwhile, it’s down to a sudden death final on Sunday at 1 pm for the PEI women’s berth at the 2015 Canada Games. The Charlottetown Curling Complex team of  skip Lauren Moerike, 3rd Ashley Gallant, 2nd Annika Kelly, and lead Tati Kelly, with coach Angela Hodgson tied up their best of 3 series against the Kaleigh Mackay foursome from Crapaud with a 9-6 come-from-behind win this afternoon to force a deciding game on Sunday. Mackay and her team of third Danielle Collings, second stone Alyssa Wright, and lead Kaleigh Peters, with coach AJ Campbell, won the 1st game this morning, by an 11-3 score.

In this afternoon’s match, Mackay had a 3-0 lead after 2 ends, with Moerike scoring a deuce in the third. The teams traded singles in 4 and 5 to give Mackay a 4-3 edge at the half. Mackay scored another in the sixth for a two point lead, but a triple in the seventh gave Moerike the lead for the first time in the game. Mackay took a single in the eighth, but Moerike responded with a double in the ninth, and held Mackay to a single in the final end for the win.

The 2015 Canada Games take place February 13-March 1, 2015 in Prince George BC, with the men’s curling event taking place during Week 1 (Feb. 13-21) and the women’s event being held Week 2 (Feb. 21-Mar. 1).

Smith and Mackay win 1st game of best of 3 Canada Games selection finals

Canada-Games

Draw one is complete at Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in the Best of 3 selection finals for PEI’s men’s and women’s entries for the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George BC, with the Tyler Smith and Kaleigh Mackay teams picking up the wins.

Tyler Smith and his team of 3rd Brooks Roche, 2nd Dylan Lowery, and lead Ryan Lowery, with coach Kevin Smith, beat the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club 12-5 in the 1st men’s game. MacFadyen is unable to play due to illness, so third James Dalton moved up to skip for the weekend, with Alberton’s Leslie Noye sparing at third. Matthew MacDonald plays second, and Parker MacFadyen throws lead stone for the team, which is coached by David MacFadyen.  The teams traded deuces in the first two ends, but Smith, who skipped PEI’s 2011 Canada Games men’s entry, followed a triple in end 3 with a stolen deuce and two singles to lead 9-2 after 6 ends. The MacFadyen rink narrowed the gap with a deuce and a single, but a Smith triple in the 9th put the game out of reach.

The Mackay team took singles  in the first three ends, with Moerike taking singles in the next two. Mackay responded with a deuce in end 6 to lead 5-2. Saskatchewan men, Ontario women are 2014 Travelers Curling Club champions

(Travelers Curling Club Ch’ship)

Ontario’s Kerry Lackie and her team from the Westmount Golf & Curling Club in Waterloo, and Saskatchewan’s Kory Kohuch of the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon take home the 2014 Travelers Curling Club Championship champions after two exciting finals at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, N.S., on Saturday morning.

Women’s Final

Tied 3-3 after the break, Team Ontario – Lackie, Lisa McLean, Halyna Tepylo and Cynthia Roth – took control with a deuce in five and a steal in the sixth. Lackie forced PEI’s Tammi Cudmore (with Julie Scales, Jane DiCarlo and Anne Chouinard) to take one in the seventh and led 6-4 heading into the final end. A missed tick shot attempt by Ontario gave PEI a chance early in the eighth to steal for the tie, but Ontario kept the pressure on, using precision hitting to run the Charlottetown Curling Club team out of rocks for the 6-4 championship victory.

Men’s Final

Saskatchewan’s Kory Kohuch and his team of Mark Adams, Wes Lang and David Schmirler from the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon started strong with three consecutive steals, but Ontario fired back, scoring three in the fifth to even the score. Ontario – Michael Hull, Matt Mills, Luke Johnson and Lucas Parafianowicz of the Cataraqui Golf & Country Club in Kingston – was held to a single in the seventh, giving hammer back to Saskatchewan for the final end with the teams tied 4-4. Ontario’s steal chances got tougher when second Luke Johnson’s guard attempt picked, and Saskatchewan kept the pressure on with lots of rocks in play.

With the clock ticking down, Ontario’s Hull needed to freeze to the counting Saskatchewan stone on the four foot and came up just short, giving the team from Saskatoon the 5-4 win – and the championship.
