With one double round robin draw remaining on the boys’ side, defending champion Donald DeWolfe and his Cornwall rink have nailed down first place, with a 3-1 win-loss record, and have advanced to the 2 pm final. He’ll be playing the winner of the 10 am game between the other two teams in the boys’ event – the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall, and the Alex Gallant foursome from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, both of whom currently have 1-2 records.

In boys’ action today, DeWolfe beat Gallant 7-3 in the afternoon draw, and got by the young  Schut team by a 4-3 score in the evening. Schut was trailing 5-3 in his morning game against Gallant, but  scored 5 points in the 7th end to pull out an 8-5 win.

Round robin play wrapped up this evening in the four team girls’ section, with the Kristie Rogers rink from Cornwall going undefeated with a 3-0 win-loss record. The Lauren Moerike team from Charlottetown and Cornwall finished second, at 2-1, while the Sierra Clyke team from Crapaud were third, at 1-2. The Marie Doyle team from the Silver Fox didn’t manage to pick up a win in their three games, and finished fourth.

The 10 am Sunday semi-finals see Rogers play Doyle in the 1st vs 4th place game, and Moerike face Clyke in the 2nd vs 3rd match. The winners square off in the 2 pm final.

In play today, Rogers beat Doyle in the morning draw, while Moerike beat Clyke in the afternoon. Rogers defeated Moerike and Clyke beat Doyle in the evening draw.

PEI captures prequalifying final to advance to Tim Hortons Brier (Curl Cda.)

Yukon skip Bob Smallwood’s last-rock freeze attempt in the 11th end just overcurled, leaving Adam Casey’s P.E.I. team with shot rock for a 7-6 win and sending the Islanders into the main draw of the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions.

The two teams were playing the final of the pre-qualifying tournament to determine the last entry into the Brier.

In the first-draw results of round-robin play, John Morris and Team Canada (Calgary) stole singles in the seventh and eighth ends to beat Reid Carruthers of Manitoba (Winnipeg) 6-4, Brad Gushue of Newfoundland-Labrador (St. John’s) scored three in the 10th to get past Steve Laycock of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) 7-5 and Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario (Sault Ste. Marie) beat Jean-Michel Ménard of Quebec (Quebec City) 7-4.

“It’s a big relief to graduate from the pre-qualifying and move on to the big roller-coaster, I guess,” said an obviously relieved Casey, at 25 the youngest skip in this year’s Tim Hortons Brier. “Now we have a pretty quick turnaround, have to get over the high that might be right now and get ready for Ontario tonight.”

Casey, third Josh Barry, second Anson Carmody, lead Robbie Doherty, alternate Robert Campbell and coach Lincoln Peters, seemed to have the game in control after three in the third end and single steals in the fourth and fifth gave them a 5-2 lead.

But Smallwood, third Wade Scoffin, second Steve Fecteau, lead Clint Ireland, alternate Scott Odian and coach Bill Tschirhart refused to go lightly. Yukon scored two in the sixth, one in the ninth and stole one in the10th to force the extra end.

“I missed a couple there and probably made it tougher on their nerves than it needed to be,” Casey said of the fans back home watching the game. “I’m sure my mother’s in a fit back home so I apologize to her.”

But he made the shots when he needed to, including his first rock in the extra end that left Smallwood needing to freeze to P.E.I.’s shot rock at the back edge of the button. Smallwood’s shot curled just a hair too much and Casey didn’t have to play his final stone.

This evening’s second draw at 9:30 p.m. At;antic will see the two youngest teams in the field go head to head — P.E.I. vs. Ontario’s Mark Kean, in his Tim Hortons Brier debut.

In the other games Manitoba plays Saskatchewan, B.C. takes on Alberta and New Brunswick plays Northwest Territories.

There are three draws Sunday, at 11:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

TSN/RDS2, the official broadcast partner of the CCA’s Season of Champions, will provide complete coverage of the Tim Hortons Brier, leading to the gold-medal game on March 8 at 8 p.m. (all times Atlantic)

The winner of the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier will represent Canada at the Ford World Men’s Championship, March 28-April 5 in Halifax, in addition to qualifying for the 2015 Home Hardware Canada Cup in Grande Prairie, Alta., the 2016 World Financial Group Continental Cup in Las Vegas and the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier in Ottawa

PEI to take on Yukon for final Tim Hortons Brier berth. NS out (Curling Cda.)

Adam Casey of Prince Edward Island stole four in the fourth end Friday en route to an 11-3 win over Glen MacLeod of Nova Scotia to give his team a chance to get into the main draw of the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Casey and teammates Josh Barry, Anson Carmody, Robbie Doherty, alternate Robert Campbell and coach Lincoln Peters will play Bob Smallwood of the Yukon at 4:30 Saturday Atlantic time, with the winner advancing into the main draw of the Brier.

It’s the first time in Brier history that pre-qualifying has been held. The three provinces with the worst combined won-lost records in the three previous Briers played for the right to join Team Canada and the 10 other provinces in the main draw.

That meant P.E.I., Nova Scotia and Yukon played a single round-robin with the two teams with the best records advancing to today’s play-in game.

P.E.I. had lost the opening game Thursday 8-1 to Smallwood but Nova Scotia then outscored Yukon 9-5 Friday morning, setting the stage for the all-Maritime match.

After splitting their games Smallwood, Wade Scoffin, Scott Odion, Clint Ireland, Steve Fecteau and coach Bill Tschirhart had thought they were out. But they finished second to P.E.I. in the pregame draws to the button and that, combined with their 1-1 record moved them forward and meant the winner of the Nova Scotia-P.E.I. game would join them.

“We’re happy to have this opportunity,” Scoffin said. “Our goal first of all was to get to Saturday. Now we have to refocus, set new goals and prepare to play well (today).”

In the pivotal fourth end of their game, P.E.I took advantage of narrow Nova Scotia misses to bury three counters behind deep cover going to skip rocks. Throwing last stones, Peter Burgess was narrow with an attempted hit-and-roll to shot with his first rock and was heavy with his second-rock draw, leaving Casey to count four.

“The game was one shot, probably one of the first pressure draws he had and it just slid on him,” Casey said of Burgess’s final rock.

It was another end where P.E.I.’s front end of Doherty and Carmody set the table for a multiple point end.

“At this level the front end is huge,” said Casey. They set the tone. If you leads playing 100 percent and you’re giving him semi-difficult shots it makes a huge difference. They’re chasing, the second and third have to really step it up or they leave the skip with really tough ones.”

The loss was especially hard for Nova Scotia because they were just two centimetres back of the Yukon in the pre-game draw rankings.

“We had it in our hands and were just a little off, about two centimetres,” said MacLeod. “The rock died as it was coming into the house.”

“That’s really unfortunate,” added Casey. “Glen was the first skip I played with coming into junior and I have a ton of respect for him. To lose by two centimetres is tough.”

TSN/RDS2, the official broadcast partner of the CCA’s Season of Champions, will provide complete coverage of the Tim Hortons Brier, leading to the gold-medal game on March 8 at 8 p.m.

Canadian Curling Association now Curling Canada – unveils new name, new logo, new brand

(Curling Canada) A new name, a new logo and new branding will take Canada’s governing body for the sport of curling into the future, it was announced today.

Screen Shot 2015-02-25 at 10.24.43 AM

Curling Canada is the new title for the world’s largest domestic curling association, replacing the title of Canadian Curling Association, which had been in place since 1990.

As well, a new, simple and elegant emblem has been unveiled that requires no explanation about its origin — the emblem features a curling rock placed on top of a Red Maple Leaf inside a shield.

Go to curling.ca/brand to see more information about our new look and branding. To download more information on our new name and emblem, click here.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to launch a new era and a new look for the sport of curling in Canada,” said Curling Canada Chief Executive Officer Greg Stremlaw. “The logo instantly identifies the sport and its role in Canada, and has an iconic, bold feel to it that at once looks modern and yet respectful of the game’s rich history and roots in Canada.”

The new Curling Canada emblem is inspired by the shield iconography that is unique to curling in Canada, appearing over the years on provincial badges, club patches, trophies and banners, and was the centrepiece of this organization’s emblem for more than half a century.

“I love the way the new emblem speaks to the history of our great sport but also takes us to the future,” said 2014 Olympic gold-medallist Jennifer Jones. “It’s always wonderful to wear the Maple Leaf and represent your country, and the new Curling Canada brand will be instantly identifiable and talked about for all of the right reasons.”

The Curling Canada brand redesign, which was undertaken with collaboration and significant support from the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), was conducted by the firm of Hulse & Durrell, which has put together numerous brand launches over the years, most notably that of the COC as well as the branding for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

“Our goal was to create a brand that draws from the past, is rooted in the present, and reimagines the future of this sport — a brand that stands the test of time,” said Ben Hulse, partner with Hulse & Durrell. “We searched for timeless values and aesthetics in Curling Canada’s extraordinary history and brought these qualities to every aspect of the new brand.”

Over the coming months, the comprehensive rebranding will show up in all that Curling Canada does, both on and off the ice. A new-look website (curling.ca) that features the new identity will launch on Saturday, and the new logos and colours will be part of the in-ice markings on display for the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, which begins on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

“The process to get us to this point where we can unveil our new branding and emblem was a long one, but the end result shows that it was worth it,” said Marilyn Neily, Chair of the Curling Canada Board of Governors. “The work put in by Hulse & Durrell should be commended as they created the ideal blend of tradition and modern impact that will keep moving our sport forward.”

The new logos and Curling Canada style will be a significant part of the Team Canada uniform going forward for future World Championships as well as the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Additionally, through a new partnership with TSN and Mustang Products, clothing featuring the new Curling Canada logos, as well as retro-style items, will be on sale as of Saturday through TSN Shop (tsnshop.ca).

Curling Canada’s social media channels also will take on the new brand: twitter.com/curlingcanada, Facebook.com/curlingcanada, youtube.com/curlingcanada and instagram.com/curlingcanada.

The Dominion Curling Association was the first name of Canada’s curling governing body. Formed in 1935, it was renamed the Canadian Curling Association in 1967, with the development program Curl Canada formed in 1974. Meanwhile, the Canadian Ladies Curling Association came into existence in 1961, and upon merging with the CCA and Curl Canada in 1990, the Canadian Curling Association left as the lone brand for the sport’s governance in Canada.

Now, Curling Canada will become the brand of record for curling in this country, covering all aspects of the sport with comprehensive guidelines that align the brand with Curling Canada’s extensive network of partners, sponsors, broadcasters and curling stakeholders. The new name and look also will apply to a myriad of other branded assets that include but are not limited to Curling Canada’s Hall of Fame, Curling Canada’s philanthropic program For The Love of Curling and the Season of Champions series of events. A complete over-arching brand architecture has been created through Curling Canada’s first systematic brand overhaul in all facets of its business operations.

In addition to being a shorter title, Curling Canada has the added benefit that it’s the same title in French and English.

Yukon’s Smallwood routs P.E.I.’s Casey in opening game of ‘Prier’ (Calgary Herald)

(Jeff MacKinnon for the Calgary Herald)

Social media had come up with a name for it before the first rock was thrown — it is now the Prier.

After much back-and-forth from haters and supporters over the past year, pre-qualifying made its debut Thursday at the Canadian men’s curling championship with Bob Smallwood of the Yukon routing Adam Casey of Prince Edward Island 8-1 in seven ends at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Gavin Young / Calgary Herald

Smallwood faces Glen MacLeod of Nova Scotia Friday morning at 8 a.m. and MacLeod then plays Casey at 3:30 p.m. [add 3 hours for PEI time]

The two top teams meet during Saturday’s opening draw at 1:30 p.m. for the right to move into the main draw and play Ontario’s Mark Kean on Saturday evening (6:30 p.m.).

This is Casey’s fourth straight trip to the Brier but first as a skip from his native province after he played with Brad Gushue out of Newfoundland and Labrador until this season. He was favoured to be the survivor of pre-qualifying, but with a loss Friday this could be a brief Brier for his rink.

“I came out and struggled a bit so I’ll take the blame,” Casey said.

“The guys played OK. The first couple of ends got away from us. The good thing is it’s a pre-qualifier and 1-1 is OK as long as we have our draw to the button and hopefully we look back on this and this game doesn’t make much difference.”

If the three teams are all 1-1 after Friday, there will be a draw to the button to determine who gets into the pre-qualifying final.

Casey’s gone on record as saying the new Brier pre-qualifying is “stupid.” He arrived in Calgary four days before the start of play Thursday to workout at The Glencoe Club, but struggled when he moved over the Saddledome. His team arrived in Calgary at four hours before Thursday’s game because of flight delays.

Yukon tops P.E.I. to open Brier pre-qualifying round (CCA)

It took Bob Smallwood 20 years to return to the men’s national curling championship and although he’s not yet in the main field for the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, he and his Yukon teammates took a positive first step Thursday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Smallwood, along with teammates Wade Scoffin, alternate Scott Odion playing for Steve Facteau, and Clint Ireland, jumped into a 4-0 lead after two ends and went on to defeat Adam Casey of Prince Edward Island 8-1 after seven ends in the first game of the pre-qualifying round robin.

“It relives a little bit of pressure, getting that first win,” said Smallwood. “We’ll see if we can carry on the momentum for tomorrow morning’s game.”

Smallwood scored two in the first end, stole a pair in the second, gave up one in the third, got that back in the fourth and then stole singles in the next three ends before hands were shaken.

Casey, whose teammates Josh Barry, Anson Carmody and Robbie Doherty didn’t arrive in Calgary until Thursday because of flight problems out of P.E.I. (Casey arrived on Monday), struggled early and were never able to cut into the Yukon lead.

“I came out and struggled a bit so I’ll take the blame,” said Casey, who was at the Tim Hortons Brier last year playing with Brad Gushue’s Newfoundland-Labrador team. “The first couple of ends got away from us but the guys played okay. Good thing is 1-1 is okay as long as we have a draw to the button. Hopefully we can look back at this and it doesn’t make much difference.”

Casey plays the other team in the pre-qualifying round, Nova Scotia (Glen MacLeod), at 6:30 p.m. Atlantic on Friday.

Smallwood represented the Yukon/Northwest Territories at the Brier in 1994 and 1995 under the name Robert Andrews. He changed his surname in 1999 in honour of his grandmother whom he considered his number one fan.

Canada Games Team PEI Women loses final round robin game in extra end.

The PEI Women’s curling team, skipped by Kaleigh Mackay lost their final round robin game this afternoon at the Canada Games in Prince George, to the Northwest Territories, by a 9-6 score in an extra end. PEI trailed 3-2 at the 5th end break, with the teams matching points in the second half, until PEI stole the 10th end for the tie. The Northwest Territories had hammer in the extra end, and scored three points for the win. This leaves PEI with a 2-4 win-loss record, which will not advance them to the playoff round. They will now play in a round to determine seeding positions for the next Games.  Games are scheduled for 4 and 11 pm AST on Friday.

Tim Hortons Brier opens Saturday in Calgary, PEI play in the Pre-Qualifier round starts tonight (CCA)

History will be made on Saturday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome when Team Canada steps onto the ice for its inaugural game at the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier.

The Calgary-based team of third Pat Simmons, second Carter Rycroft and lead Nolan Thiessen captured the 2014 Canadian men’s curling championship in Kamloops, B.C., 12 months ago to earn the right to become the first Team Canada in Brier history as the defending champion.

After skip Kevin Koe left the team, the remaining three recruited fellow Calgarian John Morris to skip, and that lineup will make its Tim Hortons Brier debut in Saturday’s opening draw at 4:30 p.m. (all times Atlantic, subtract three hours for Calgary time) against Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers.

Morris is a two-time Tim Hortons Brier champion (2008, 2009) and 2010 Olympic gold-medallist (all while playing third for Alberta’s Kevin Martin), while Rycroft and Thiessen both won two Brier titles with Koe (2010, 2014).

Koe, meanwhile, will be skipping his new team (third Marc Kennedy, vice-skip Brent Laing [throwing second rocks], lead Ben Hebert) at the Tim Hortons Brier after winning his fourth Alberta championship over the past six years. Koe will face off against his former teammates in the highly anticipated Battle of Alberta on Tuesday, March 3, at 9:30 p.m.

For Morris, it will be the record-setting fourth set of colours worn by a player at the Tim Hortons Brier. He’s previously represented British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. He had shared the record of three with his father Earle (Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba) and Ryan Fry (Manitoba, Newfoundland/Labrador, Northern Ontario).

But while the first Battle of Alberta stands out in the round-robin draw, it’s by no means the only game with high-profile teams and high-profile implications.

Team Canada, from left, Carter Rycroft, John Morris, Nolan Thiessen and Pat Simmons will open the Tim Hortons Brier on Saturday. Team Canada, from left, Carter Rycroft, John Morris, Nolan Thiessen and Pat Simmons will open the Tim Hortons Brier on Saturday.

The field includes two other Olympic gold-medallists — reigning Olympic champ Brad Jacobs and his team from Northern Ontario (third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden, lead Ryan Harnden) and 2006 champ Brad Gushue and his longtime third Mark Nichols from Newfoundland/Labrador (the team is rounded out by second Brett Gallant and lead Geoff Walker).

More experience is provided by the likes of 2006 Brier champion Jean-Michel Ménard of Quebec, who finished fourth at the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier with his Saint-Romuald quartet.

Last year’s runner-up — B.C.’s Jim Cotter (who had Morris calling the game and throwing third rocks last year) — will also be in the hunt for a playoff berth at the Scotiabank Saddledome with his team from Vernon/Kelowna.

Carruthers, meanwhile, advanced to his first Tim Hortons Brier as a skip by taking down the country’s hottest team in the Manitoba championship, beating Mike McEwen in an all-Winnipeg final.

Coming out of Saskatchewan is Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock, a former world junior champion who is currently sitting fifth on the Canadian Team Ranking System (Jacobs, Gushue and Carruthers are second, third and fourth respectively, behind the leading McEwen foursome).

Rounding out the field for the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier are Ontario’s Mark Kean (Stoney Creek), Jamie Koe of the Northwest Territories (Yellowknife), New Brunswick’s Jeremy Mallais (Saint John), Nova Scotia’s Glen MacLeod (Halifax), Prince Edward Island’s Adam Casey (Summerside/Charlottetown) and the Yukon’s Robert Smallwood (Whitehorse)

It will be the  fourth time the Canadian men’s curling championship has been played at the Saddledome (curling capacity approximately 19,000 seats), and the seventh time it’s been played in Calgary. In all three previous Saddledome Briers, Alberta teams prevailed: Martin in 1997 and 2009, and Randy Ferbey in 2002. Calgary previously played host in 1948, 1961 and 1980.

The 1997 Brier featured the single-game attendance record for the event: 17,024.

The 2015 Tim Hortons Brier will mark the 11th year of title sponsorship of the Canadian men’s championship by Tim Hortons.

It will be the 86th renewal of the Canadian men’s curling championship. Alberta has played host to the Brier on 13 previous occasions since the event’s inception in 1927. The Brier has been played in 31 cities across Canada, from Victoria to St. John’s. Manitoba has won a leading 27 Briers, while Alberta is just one back with 26.

Teams will play a 12-team round-robin draw leading to the Page playoff round, which sees the top two teams meeting in the Page 1-2 game, with the winner advancing to the final while the loser goes to the semifinal. The third- and fourth-place teams meet in the Page 3-4 game, with the winner advancing to the semifinal on Saturday night. The loser plays in the bronze-medal game Sunday morning against the semifinal loser.

The Tim Hortons Brier will be preceded for the first time by a a pre-qualifying round to determine the final entry into the 12-team main draw.

Team Canada is joined in the main draw by the 10 teams with the best combined records in the previous three Briers, meaning Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the Yukon will play off for the 12th and final berth. Nunavut declined an opportunity to participate.

Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and the Yukon will play a single round-robin at the Scotiabank Saddledome, with the teams with the two best records advancing to the play-in game, which will be contested Saturday, Feb. 28, at 4:30 p.m. (all times Atlantic), concurrent with the opening draw of the Tim Hortons Brier round-robin. Admission to the pre-qualifying rounds is free.

Rookie skip Casey hopes to guide P.E.I. into Brier (Calgary Herald)

(by Kristen Odland, Calgary Herald)

Adam Casey took a break from pursuing his master’s degree in applied science from Dalhousie University to fly across the country, hoping for a shot at attending the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier.

In theory, the native of Seven Mile Bay, P.E.I., should be in Calgary for two weeks — from the three-team pre-qualifying tournament which starts Thursday until the end of the men’s national curling championship.

Adam Casey, skip of Team P.E.I., practices on Wednesday at the Glencoe Club ahead of Thursday night's Brier pre-qualifier match against Yukon.
Adam Casey, skip of Team P.E.I., practices on Wednesday at the Glencoe Club ahead of Thursday night’s Brier pre-qualifier match against Yukon.Ted Rhodes / Calgary Herald

And should that be the case, Casey has taken the necessary steps to ensure he’ll be able to perform with his P.E.I.-based team until the end.

“There are some benefits (with being in Calgary early),” said Casey who would be attending his fourth Brier should his team advance. “The games at the end of the week, they mean something. It’s good to have every game out there be important … whatever team gets through will essentially have three games of practice before the (Brier) starts. There is some experience you gain and confidence with the ice … it’s a great opportunity.

“Whatever team gets through the pre-qualifier gets a leg up on the competition.”

A little background on his group.

Made up of third Josh Barry, second Anson Carmody, and lead Robbie Doherty, they were formed at the end of last season when Casey received news that he wouldn’t be returning for a fourth season with Brad Gushue’s team out of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

And the team didn’t just magically come together.

There was some familiarity between teammates as Casey and Carmody won a 2009 Canadian junior title together and silver at the 2009 world junior championship. Carmody is experienced and attended the national championship last year and Doherty has experience at the provincial level [PEICurling.com ed. note -and has been on a winning Canadian Mixed team]. Meanwhile Barry skipped the New Brunswick men’s rink at the 2013 Canadian junior championships and played lead on the province’s team at the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier.

As expected with every new group, there have been some ups and downs.

“But I think I’m relatively happy and happy with our progress as a team and confident in the way the guys have been throwing,” Casey said. “We’re looking forward to a good week here because we could definitely go in the right direction.”
