Renovated Western Community Club in Alberton holds opening

The Western Community Curling Club in Alberton got the new curling season underway on October 13 with a ceremony to mark the “reopening” of the club with a new entryway and a refurbished upstairs lounge.

The improvements to the Alberton club were jointly funded by the club, the federal government through ACOA, and the provincial government. Volunteer club members provided most of the labour.

Alberton ribbon-cutting

Ribbon cutting duties in the renovated lounge were performed by (L to R) Club President Fr. Art Pendergast, Gail Shea, federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans from the nearby riding of Egmont, Audrey Callaghan, club vice-president and vice-president of the PEI Curling Association, and Pat Murphy, MLA for Alberton-Roseville.  Provincial Minister of Fisheries and Rural Development Neil LeClair was at the ceremony but could not be present when this picture was taken.

“I know the community is very proud of its curling club — and this facility is used extensively by residents and neighbours alike,” Mr. Murphy said in a speech.

The next step leading up to the start of play is an Open House from October 26 to 29 when everyone is invited to drop by between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. to throw a few stones, join the club or just socialize.

Weekly play is set to start November 2.

An innovation this year will be a Stick Curling league which will play Fridays at 10:00 a.m.

CHARLOTTETOWN,  (IIS)– The Charlottetown Curling Club was established in 1895 and now has 450 members. Thanks to $104,600 from the Province’s Island Community Fund, this aging facility is undergoing major improvements.

“Curling is one of the most popular winter sports in Prince Edward Island, said Minister Carolyn Bertram. “The Charlottetown Club has been a developing ground for many athletes who have gone on to compete at the national and world levels, including Robyn MacPhee’s Team who recently represented PEI at the Scott Tournament of Hearts and Brett Gallant’s Team who became Canadian Jr. Champions and went on to win a silver medal at the Worlds. The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to support the Charlottetown Curling Club as they strive to better serve curlers and our One Island Community.”

As part of the project, a Jet Ice System was recently installed in the facility to enable the Club to make ice faster and use less energy. A new roof is currently being installed and over the new few months the Club will receive a new ice plant and lighting upgrades.

The Charlottetown Curling Club has five lanes of ice to provide winter entertainment for the community. Their programs are designed for anyone from age 6 and up. “Our members and the community are very excited about the funding and the resulting renovations,” said Rob Warren, Manager of the Charlottetown Curling Club. “I want to thank the Provincial Government for their support; this project would certainly not have been possible without it.

Committed to in Budget 2008, the Island Community Fund represents a provincial investment of $27.5 million towards the infrastructure needs of Prince Edward Island communities. The Fund consists of two components – a small projects component, and a strategic initiatives component. Eligible categories of funding under this program include Community Safety and Security, Recreation, and Cultural infrastructure not funded under the current programs. A high priority will also be given to projects which support strategic initiatives for the entire province.

For more information about provincial infrastructure initiatives visit www.gov.pe.ca/go/infrastructure.

Fitzner-Leblanc defeats Lecocq in TSA Classic Final

The Halifax Mayflower Curling Club rink of Ian Fitzner-Leblanc, Stuart MacLean, Kent Smith, and Philip Crowell beat the defending champion Marc Lecocq team from New Brunswick by an 8-6 score this afternoon to win the Best Western – TSA Curling Classic at the Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John NB. Other members of the Lecocq foursome are Grant Odishaw, Rick Perron, and Jeff Lacey.

Lecocq beat Charlottetown’s Robert Campbell rink, while Fitzner-Leblanc defeated Chad Stevens of New Brunswick in semi-final play. On Sunday morning, Campbell beat  Charlottetown clubmate John Likely in the quarter-finals to advance to the semis. Scores for these games were not available. Playing with Robert Campbell were Steve Burgess, Jamie Newson, and Rob Doherty, while Phil Gorveatt, Mark Butler, and Mike Dillon round out the Likely squad.

The other PEI rink in the event, which includes Tyler MacKenzie at skip, along with Steve van Ouwerkerk, Lincoln Peters, and Nick van Ouwerkerk, finished round robin play with a 1-4 win-loss record, while Likely and Campbell advanced to the playoff round with 4-1 records.

Birt out at London Charity Cashspiel

PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink, which includes third Shelly Bradley, second Leslie
MacDougall, and lead Stefanie Clark, with coach Charlie Sullivan, had to keep winning on Sunday, after losing both Saturday games in the triple-knockout $32,000 Southwestern Ontario Women’s Cashspiel, being played in London Ontario.

Unfortunately, they lost their first Sunday game, against Jacqueline Harrison of the Alliston Curling Club, and are eliminated from further play.

On Saturday, the Birt foursome lost 8-2 against Team Switzerland, skipped by Mirjam Ott, and 8-3 against the Lisa Farnell team from Peterborough. The Birt rink got off to a great start, winning their first two games on Friday, against Alison Goring of Toronto, and four time Canadian and two time world Seniors champ Anne Dunn of Cambridge Ont.

The quarter-final round goes tonight at 7:30, with the semis going Monday morning at 9, and the final game at 1 pm. All times are Eastern.

World Champions and last year’s event runner-up Team China, skipped by Bingyu
Wang, have already qualified for the quarter-finals, as have Team Switzerland.
Wang handed Rachel Homan of Ottawa, who has won the event the last two years,
her first loss in this year’s event Saturday afternoon, taking a second-end
triple, and scoring a deuce in the final end of a close 7-6 battle.

The Swiss Olympic team followed their win against Birt with a 5-4 edging of
Coldwater Ontario’s Sherry Middaugh foursome.

In the B flight, Homan doubled Erika Brown of Madison Wisconsin 6-3 on Sunday morning, while Cathy Auld of Toronto recorded a 6-2 upset over Sherry Middaugh.

Auld and Homan now advance to the 7:30 pm quarter-finals.

All proceeds from the charity cashspiel, now in its 13th year, go toward breast cancer research. To date, the cashspiel has raised $182,915 for the cause.
