O’LEARY, P.E.I. — Two familiar faces skipped their rinks to the provincial women’s and men’s curling championships on Saturday.
Suzanne Birt and her rink out of the Montague and Cornwall clubs defeated Montague’s Darlene London in three straight games – 12-0, 12-2 and 10-1 – to win the provincial Scotties title and secure P.E.I.’s berth at the Scotties Canadian women’s curling championship in Calgary from Feb. 20-28.
“The feeling of winning never gets old,” said Meaghan Hughes, who throws second stones for Team Birt. “We are all pretty excited, and we all had the same butterflies going into this weekend as usual. It was nice to pull it off.”
Eddie MacKenzie skipped a rink to the Tankard provincial men’s championship for the sixth time. The MacKenzie rink, which lists its home clubs as Crapaud and Montague, defeated the Blair Jay-skipped rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside 10-4, 6-3 and 8-4. All three games were decided in nine ends.
“It’s always nice to win a Tankard and get a chance to go to the Brier,” said MacKenzie, who finished runner-up to Bryan Cochrane in the 2020 Tankard. “It was nice to get some games in and have an actual playdown.”
MacKenzie, third Tyler Smith, second Sean Ledgerwood and lead Ryan Lowery will wear P.E.I.’s colours at the Tim Hortons Brier Canadian men’s curling championship, which will also take place in Calgary from March 6-14.
“It’s definitely cool to win it in the first year out of junior as a men’s player,” said Smith, who twice skipped junior teams at previous Tankards.

Third Marie Christianson, lead Michelle McQuaid and alternate Kathy O’Rourke round out Team Birt, coached by Mitch O’Shea.
O’Rourke played third in the provincials as Christianson could not travel to P.E.I. from Nova Scotia due to COVID-19 restrictions. She joked she played more than anticipated after joining the Birt rink this season.
“I told them they broke our contract numerous times already,” O’Rourke said with a laugh.

“Obviously, we missed having Marie here; she wasn’t able to come because of the self-isolation requirements obviously, but she was cheering from afar,” said Birt. “The girls played awesome all weekend and had some great games.”
London’s teammates are third Robyn MacDonald, second Shelley Rice and lead Gail Greene.

It was a sweep for both the women’s and men’s winning teams this weekend at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, as the Eddie MacKenzie rink from the Crapaud and Montague curling clubs went undefeated with a 3-0 record against the Blair Jay rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside to win the PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Champion. MacKenzie also made it to the finals last year, and has now skipped six winning PEI Tankard teams, and played third for winning skip Mike Gaudet back in 2004.
PEI Tankard winners (L-R): Eddie MacKenzie (skip), Tyler Smith (3rd), Sean Ledgerwood (2nd), Ryan Lowery (lead)
MacKenzie, backed up by third Tyler Smith, second Sean Ledgerwood, and lead Ryan Lowery, beat the Blair Jay foursome 10-4, 6-3, and 8-4 to take the best of five series in three games. Playing with Jay was his son Chuck Jay at third, along with second stone Jon Philip, and lead Glenn Rogers.
Tankard Finalists (L-R): Blair Jay (skip), Chuck Jay (third), Jon Philip (2nd), Glenn Rogers (lead)
The winning MacKenzie team will now head to the Calgary “Bubble” to play in the Tim Hortons Brier, presented by AGI, from Mar. 6-14 at the Markin MacPhail Centre.
The PEI Scotties wrapped up in the same draw, with the Suzanne Birt team also going undefeated, to repeat as PEI women’s champs and head to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the same venue, from February 20-28.
Suzanne Birt, with her team from the Montague and Cornwall curling clubs, will be heading to her 12th Scotties Tournament of Hearts, this time in the Calgary “Bubble” from February 20-28, after winning the Best of Five series against Montague’s Darlene London rink three games straight, by scores of 12-0, 12-2 and 10-1, at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

The Suzanne Birt and Eddie MacKenzie rinks are one win away from winning the P.E.I. Scotties and Tankard titles at the Maple Leaf Curling Club.
Birt and her rink from the Cornwall and Montague clubs defeated Montague’s Darlene London team 12-2 on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. They are the only two teams entered in this year’s provincial women’s championship.

MacKenzie and his rink from Montague and Crapaud got by Blair Jay’s squad from the Silver Fox in Summerside 6-3 on Saturday. MacKenzie also holds a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series after a 10-4 victory on Friday.
London and Jay now face the prospect of having to win three straight games. They will look to stay alive in Draw 3 on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Eddie MacKenzie rink from the Crapaud and Montague curling clubs and the Suzanne Birt team from the Montague and Cornwall clubs are each just one win away from winning their respective PEI Tankard and Scotties titles at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, and a win at 4 pm would give them Sunday off.

In the 11 am Saturday draw, the defending champion Birt rink followed up Friday’s 12-0 six-end win over Montague’s Darlene London foursome with a 12-2 victory in seven ends, while MacKenzie, coming home up 6-3 without last rock advantage, ran Blair Jay and his Silver Fox team out of rocks in the final end to win by a 6-3 score. MacKenzie won his Friday opener 10-4 over Jay.

Third place honours went to Cornwall members Janette Fraser and Carolyn Crockett.
The event was organized by Etta Reid of Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network, with support from Ernie Stavert of Stick Curl PEI.

They also have some commentators lined up!
The 2021 PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championship and the PEI Tankard Provincial Men’s Curling Championship both take place at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary from January 29-31, with two teams entered in each event.
Entered in the Scotties are the defending champion Suzanne Birt rink, along with their Montague clubmates the Darlene London team.
Eddie MacKenzie (left) and Blair Jay
The Eddie MacKenzie men’s squad from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, who were the finalist team last year, and the Blair Jay foursome from the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside are the men’s Tankard entries.
Last year’s winning Bryan Cochrane men’s team is not entered this year. Team Birt’s alternate Kathy O’Rourke will be filling in for regular third Marie Christianson of Halifax at this event.
Both provincial championships will play best of five draws. In advance of this weekend, Curl PEI has changed back sweeping rules to the standard Curling Canada Rules of Play, which allow for two sweepers on a shot.
