In stick curling there are two curlers per team, who deliver their rocks with delivery sticks, with each team member delivering from opposite ends. Sweeping is allowed only from the hog line to the back of the house at the playing end. Two curlers, one from each team, alternately deliver 6 stones each per end, while their teammate skips that end. The roles are then reversed, and the partners deliver the stones back. No stone may be removed from play until the fourth stone of each end. Games are six ends and take about an hour to play. For more information on stick curling, including complete rules of play, visit www.stickcurling.ca.

From the race tracks to the curling rinks, from the halls of Westisle to the soccer fields of West Prince, from his loving family to his adoring friends, Kevin Gallant of Bloomfield will be sorely missed.

Bloomfield resident Kevin Gallant passed away from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident on the Confederation Trail, Wednesday, Dec 18. He is remembered by friends and family for his warm smile, his humble personality, and his love of sports, namely curling and stock car racing. Submitted photo

“It just feels too hard to believe,” said Nathan Ellis, a close friend of Kevin’s since the sixth grade. Mr Ellis heard of the snowmobile accident that claimed Kevin’s life shortly after it happened, Wednesday, Dec 18, on the Confederation Trail in Coleman. Kevin’s vehicle went off the trail and collided with a tree in the late morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene. “It’s just heart breaking because he was such a great friend to all of us. We will never forget him.”

“Nothing beats the excitement of seeing curling’s biggest fans get their chance to stand on competition ice to shoot for a million dollars,” said Clinton Braganza, Vice-President Brand Marketing, Capital One Canada. “We love giving Canadian curling fans a chance to get in the action and this year will be no exception.  We wish the 2014  participants the best of luck.”

In order to win the Capital One Million Dollar Button’s grand prize of a one-time payment of $1 million, the contest’s finalist must successfully deliver a rock from the hack and place the stone within the button on a regulation curling sheet. The contest’s finalist will have just one opportunity to execute the shot.

Four lucky semifinalists will win an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal, where they will compete for the finalist position. The person who places the stone closest to the button at that event will become the finalist in Kamloops

The finalist will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for themselves and three friends, who will be their own personal “cheer squad.”

“We’re very happy to have the Capital One Million Dollar Button contest back as part of our Season of Champions events,” said Greg Stremlaw, the Chief Executive Officer of the CCA. “There’s already so much to offer to our great fans, but thanks to our partnership with Capital One, there’s even more value.
