Switzerland Wins Gold at World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship (CCA)

(by Jean Mills)

Switzerland capped a perfect week, winning every game in the competition on their way to a 7-6 victory over Sweden to win the gold medal at the 2012 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Erzurum, Turkey, on Sunday.

For Canada, an eight-game undefeated streak came to an end in quarterfinal action Sunday morning when Chantelle Eberle and Dean Hicke found themselves on the short side of a 10-1 score against Sweden.

In the quarterfinal, Sweden’s Per Noreen and Camilla Johansson controlled the game from the start and were up 5-0 by the fourth-end break. Canada just missed scoring a deuce in five when an attempted hit and stick rolled out. The Swedes made virtually every shot and by the end of the seventh end, held a 10-1 lead.

“They just made everything and we just missed everything,” summed up Eberle after the game.

In the Bronze Medal game, Austria’s Christian Toth and Claudia Roth defeated the USA’s Brady and Cristin Clark 12-7 after a score of 4 in the seventh end put the game out of reach.

Fredericton NB to stage 2013 World Mixed Doubles and World Senior Curling Championships (CCA)

The World Curling Federation (WCF) and the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) today announced that the City of Fredericton New Brunswick will host the 2013 World Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships and World Mixed Doubles.

All three world championships will take place at the new Grant-Harvey Centre, April 13-20, 2013.  Approximately 30 teams are expected to compete for global honours in Mixed Doubles while almost 40 teams will seek to capture Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s world titles.

The $29.5 million Grant-Harvey Centre, scheduled to open in June, has two ice surfaces which will be utilized during the week…one Olympic-size (500 seats) and one National Hockey League-size (1,500 seats).  The host committee executive director is 2000 Brier runner-up Wayne Tallon, with both the Fredericton Curling Club and Capital Winter Club acting as co-chairs and host clubs.

World Curling Federation President Kate Caithness said, “We are delighted to be returning to New Brunswick for two events which will run side by side in 2013 – the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and the World Senior Curling Championships.

“Following on from the success of the 2009 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship in Moncton, the World Curling Federation is looking forward to being able to showcase the discipline of Mixed Doubles Curling in Canada and, at the same time, offer a world class Senior Curling Championship event for curling fans to enjoy.”

It marks the first time that Canada will host the World Mixed Doubles, which began in 2008 in Vierumäki, Finland.   However, Canada has previously staged the World Seniors in 2003 in Winnipeg and 2007 in Edmonton, since the championships officially began in 2002 in Bismarck, North Dakota.

“We are pleased to be able to partner with the World Curling Federation and the City of Fredericton on hosting these major world curling championships,” explained Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Curling Association.

Team Canada at the 2012 WSCC

“Canada has played host to many major curling events, and it will be a wonderful opportunity to further expose these unique world properties, in addition to the Ford World Men’s Curling Championship (in Victoria), all being staged in Canada in 2013.

“Of particular note is the World Mixed Doubles, which we hope this hosting in Fredericton will serve as an exceptional showcase to the International Olympic Committee for this discipline being a potential great addition to the Olympic platform in the future.”

“I am pleased that Fredericton will be the host city for these world curling championships in 2013.  We can’t wait to showcase the newly built Grant-Harvey Centre, which will be the venue for the games,” said Mayor Brad Woodside. “Our community embraces events like this, and I am sure that the athletes, the Canadian Curling Association and the World Curling Federation will be treated to some of the finest hospitality our hotels, restaurants, attractions, and residents have to offer.”

Fredericton has hosted a number of curling championships over the years – the 1975 Brier, 1988 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, 1965 Canadian junior men’s, 1985 Canadian Junior women’s, 2005 Canadian Juniors (men and women) and the 1980 Canadian senior women’s.

This year’s renewal of the World Seniors concluded in Kastrup, Denmark on the weekend.   Canada was represented by New Brunswick’s Heidi Hanlon and Manitoba’s Kelly Robertson.  Hanlon won a gold medal, defeating Scotland in the final to finish undefeated, while Robertson earned a silver medal, losing in an extra end to Ireland.

Canada has enjoyed tremendous success at the World Seniors, winning seven men’s and eight women’s (including the last five) titles since 2002.   Canada’s representatives at the World Seniors have been the Canadian Senior champions from the previous year.

For the 2013 World Seniors, Canada’s colours will be worn by Alberta’s Cathy King of Edmonton and Rob Armitage of Red Deer, winners of the Canadian Seniors in Abbotsford, British Columbia in March.

The 2012 World Mixed Doubles got underway today in Erzurum, Turkey.  Canada is being represented by Saskatchewan’s Dean Hicke and Chantelle Eberle.

Since the World Mixed Doubles began in 2008, Canada’s best finish has been a bronze medal by Manitoba’s Sean Grassie and Alli Nimik in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2009.  Canada’s representatives for the World Mixed Doubles have been two members of the winning team from the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.   However, it has not yet been decided how Canada’s representatives for the 2013 World Mixed Doubles will be selected.    Switzerland has won three of the four World Mixed Doubles Championships, with Russia winning in 2010.

Both the World Seniors and Mixed Doubles are played over eight ends instead of 10 ends.   While the World Seniors competition follow the rules of traditional team curling, the Mixed Doubles format brings together one male and one female curler.  Teams have only six stones each (instead of eight) and one of those stones, from each team, is prepositioned on the centre line before each end of play.    Player one delivers the first and last stones and player two plays the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next.   Both team members are also allowed to sweep.

Marion Dockendorff Scotties Appreciation Award

Each year the PEI Curling Association recognizes a female curler (or curlers) who have shown great dedication to the sport either on a local, provincial, and/or a national level. The award’s name honours curling pioneer Marion Dockendorff.

Mrs. Dockendorff was a charter member of the Charlottetown Ladies Curling Club, was President of the Canadian Ladies Curling Association, was inducted to the Canadian Curling Hall Fame, and, most recently, was inducted into the PEI Curling Hall of Fame. In addition, Mrs. Dockendorff was an avid curling fan and a long time supporter of the women’s teams that represented PEI each year at the national championships. She was also a strong supporter of the junior curling program, and she inspired and encouraged many curlers, young and old to take up the game. She had a hospitable manner that made her a winner everywhere.

Gallant joins Gushue rink (Guardian)

(by Jason Malloy)

Brett Gallant’s curling future is taking him to the Rock.

The Charlottetown resident will be moving to St. John’s this summer to play with the Brad Gushue rink. The decision came after the 22 year old played second with the Newfoundland and Labrador rink at last week’s Grand Slam of Curling Players’ Championship in Summerside.

“It’s exciting for me. It’s a good opportunity to enter some of the bigger tournaments,” Gallant said Monday.

The spot opened up after Team Gushue and third Ryan Fry recently parted ways.

The move will reunite Gallant with one of his former junior teammates Adam Casey, of Seven Mile Bay, who played this season with the Gushue rink.

2012 Player’s Championship – The Finale (The Curling News)

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – John Epping of Toronto scored the winning point on his last shot to defeat Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont. in the men’s final of the 2012 Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship at Credit Union Place.

Epping’s squad from the Donalda Club scored three in the second end for a 3-1 lead, and looked good for a critical deuce in the sixth end until Epping’s last stone caught a piece of debris, scoring only one for a 6-4 lead.

Howard’s Brier and world championship foursome managed a deuce in the seventh end for a 6-6 tie but Epping faced only a draw to the full eight-foot rings on his last throw, and made it perfectly.

Epping’s unexpected run to victory saw him beat Howard earlier in the round-robin, and he also eliminated Edmonton’s Kevin Martin in the semifinal by scoring three in the seventh end and then stealing the eighth.

Epping’s team of Scott Bailey, David Mathers and Howard’s son Scott Howard cashed $28,000 for the win and another $10,000 for finishing third in the Capital One Cup race, which celebrates Grand Slam prowess.

Eighth-seeded men’s team upsets world champion in final

SUMMERSIDE – John Epping capped a Cinderella run at the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon.

Epping

Epping drew to the button on the game’s final shot to give his Toronto rink a 7-6 win over Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., in the championship game.

“From start to finish, the boys played so well today (Sunday),” said Epping, 29. “All we wanted was the four-foot.”

Lead David Mathers and second stone Scott Howard carefully guided the rock home while third stone Scott Bailey made the call from the house. Once Mathers raised his hand to indicate the shot was good, Epping dropped his broom and punched his fist in the air while breaking out in a big smile as the appreciative crowd roared its approval.

“I didn’t throw many draws all game, but Mark’s ice is so good you know it’s going to be close to the same,” said Epping referring to head ice-maker Mark Shurek. “A skip has to draw to the four-foot, and I have two great sweepers, so I didn’t have to worry about it too much.”

Million Dollar Draw to the Button contestant goes home with $5000

First year curler Beth Tetreault of Thessalon Ontario had the chance to go home with a lot of money today after the fourth end of the “Capital One Million Dollar Draw to the Button” contest at the Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship in Summerside. However, her attempt, telecast live on Global TV, was a little heavy, and her rock went through the rings. Organizers presented her with a consolation prize of $5000. Tetreault had the choice of drawing for $100,000, with the aid of expert sweepers, or to go it alone for the $1M prize. She chose to go for the big money.

Tetreault advanced to the final by winning a quarter-final during the GP Car and Home World Cup of Curling in Sault Ste. Marie in November, drawing to 6.5 inches of the button. On Saturday, she won the playoff against the other regional winners, including Summerside’s Tegan Stride.

Epping upsets Howard in Grand Slam of Curling final (Postmedia)

Calling John Epping’s rink a longshot heading into the Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship would have been generous, but the Toronto skip defied the odds to capture the final leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling.

Epping, who made the final in one slam event, missed the playoffs in a second and didn’t play in the third, upset Canadian and world champion Glenn Howard 7-6 on Sunday afternoon in Summerside, P.E.I.

Epping

John Epping (PEICurling.com photo)

The young skip was up against a field that included the likes of Howard, Kevin Martin, Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen, who have combined to dominate the cashspiel circuit in recent years. Yet Epping soldiered through the round robin with a 5-2 record, upset Martin in Saturday’s semifinal and outlasted Howard on Sunday.

After holding Howard to one in the first, Epping jumped out to an early lead with a three-spot in the second. Howard, of Coldwater, Ont., evened the score with a deuce in the third, but Epping took a two-point lead into the fourth-end break with a pair of his own.

The teams exchanged singles in the fifth and sixth ends before Howard tied the game up 6-6 with a two-point seventh end.

With hammer in hand in the eighth, Epping just needed to draw to the eight-foot to score the winning point. He did and took home the $28,000 first-place prize in addition to the $10,000 for his five round-robin wins.

Glenn Howard hardly went home empty-handed. In addition to his second-place cheque worth $22,000 and $10,000 in round-robin earnings, he also won the $50,000 bonus for finishing first in the Capital One Cup standings.

Howard also finished first in the Canadian team ranking system for this season and has earned a direct entry into the 2013 Olympic trials in Winnipeg. Edmonton’s Martin clinched the first spot in the trials with his win at the Canada Cup.

Father vs son rematch today at the Players’ Championship (The Curling News)

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – It’s a rematch of Father versus Son in today’s men’s final of the 2012 Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship.

Back on Thursday, Glenn Howard‘s world champions lost to Toronto’s John Epping – the squad that features Glenn’s son Scott Howard at second stone. Now, following Saturday night’s semifinals, the two will tangle again – this time live on the Global Television network (12 noon ET).

Stefanie Lawton (at right) and her winning team

Yesterday afternoon, the women’s crown went to Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton, a 7-3 winner over Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham. Lawton scored a first prize of $28,000 for the victory.

“It means a lot to us to win this event, we never have,” said Lawton, who lost the Saskatchewan women’s provincial final back in January. “And to be out here at the end of the season and still still curling well definitely means a lot. It feels great.”

Overton-Clapham scored $24,000 in runner-up winnings but also claimed the 2012 Capital One Cup, which signifies excellence in the four capital One Grand Slam of Curling events throughout the season. The title is accompanied by $50,000 top prize, meaning her team actually took home the biggest women’s cheque of the week: a whopping $74,000.
