New Dominion’s Lauren Lenentine and her teammates are staying together.
New Dominion’s Lauren Lenentine won her second world junior curling gold medal on Feb. 22 in Russia. Submitted
The world junior championship-winning squad of skip Mackenzie Zacharias, third Karlee Burgess, second Emily Zacharias and lead Lenentine will all move up to women’s competition next season. Lenentine and Emily Zacharias both had junior eligibility left.
“We knew that we had a really good season and we just kind of wanted to see what else we could do, so we made the decision to all move up,” Lenentine said Sunday. “We both thought it would be best if we just continued with our team because we did have really good chemistry and I think that we can keep pushing ourselves.”
“We’re definitely in the toughest curling province, so we are going to be in tough for a little while, but just being able to play those teams regularly, I think that’s going to be really beneficial because we can learn from that,” said Lenentine.
The Maritime Stick Curling Championships were held March 13-15 in Woodstock NB, with seven Island duos in attendance. Cornwall’s Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke won the Women’s Division, their eighth win in this event in the eleven times it has been held, while Victor Hogan and Alvin Hackett from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton bowed out in the semi-final round of the Open Division, where teams can be any combination of male and/or female.

Three rinks — Gordon MacDonald and Floyd Stewart from Montague, Anne Barwise and Audrey Callaghan from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and the Etta Reid and Elaine Hughes duo from the Cornwall Curling Club made it to the quarter-finals, while Walter Callaghan and Roger Gavin from Western Community, and reigning Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home PEI Stick Curling Champampionship Open Division winners Sherrill Barwise and Bill Smith, also from the Alberton club, didn’t advance to the playoff round.
This event concluded the PEI stick curling season, as an event scheduled for Western Community on March 23rd has been cancelled.
In the local curling community, it’s called barbecue season.
It supposedly relates to backyard discussions in advance of an upcoming season, talk that often leads to the formation of new rinks or the shuffling of current lineups.
I’m not sure what it’s called nationally, but whatever the label, it’s already well underway.
This past week saw news of big changes to four of Canada’s top women’s teams, with 2019 Scotties champion Chelsea Carey’s rink blown up completely; Ontario’s Rachel Homan bringing in Sarah Wilkes, who had been with Carey, and jettisoning Lisa Weagle, who had been Homan’s longtime lead; Weagle, in turn, joining Jennifer Jones’ Manitoba rink, which will become a five-player combo; and Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle replacing two players.
On the men’s side, Alberta’s Kevin Koe, the 2019 Brier camp, is bringing back John Morris, who will now play second, taking over for Colton Flasch, dropped after two years with Koe.
The movement is unusual, but only for the timing. With the 2019-20 curling season cancelled entirely because of the coronavirus, the developments are coming earlier than normal.
But make no mistake, this annual and extensive remaking process has become the norm.
For example, since the start of 2017, every one of Canada’s top 10 men’s rinks — as listed in the World Curling Tour’s Order of Merit rankings — has undergone some kind of personnel change.
They’ve been together for six years, which is turning out to be a long time in modern curling. Along the way (from left), Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker have won three Tim Hortons Brier Canadian men’s championships, hoisting the Brier Tankard most recently at the 2020 event in Kingston, Ont.
Except for one.
That is the team skipped by Brad Gushue, who ironically, once swapped out more front ends than an auto mechanic.
The St. John’s-based foursome if Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker has been together for six years, three of which have seen the rink claim the Canadian men’s championship, its most recent Brier title coming earlier this month in Kingston, Ont.
It’s the longest run of an unaltered top-level men’s quartet since Ontario’s Glenn Howard, Richard Hart, Brett Laing and Craig Savill and before that, the Ferbey Four of Albertans Randy Ferbey, David Nedohin, Scott Pfeiffer and Marcel Rocque.
The Brayden Snow and Katie Shaw rinks won the Syngenta 2020 P.E.I. under-18 curling championships at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton recently.
Snow and his team from the Charlottetown Curling Club defeated two-time defending-champion Mitchell Schut and his rink from Cornwall 5-3 in the boys’ title game. The Shaw team, out of the Cornwall Curling Club, defeated their clubmates, the Rachel MacLean foursome, also by a 5-3 score, in the girls’ final.

The Snow and Shaw rinks earned the right to represent P.E.I. at the Canadian under-18 championships in Sudbury, Ont., but Curling Canada announced Tuesday that the event was postponed indefinitely due to coronavirus (COVID-19). The nationals were scheduled for April 20 to 25.

Update:
Regretfully we have had to cancel the 2020 Canadian Masters Curling Championship in Rothesay New Brunswick.
As the COVID-19 situation has unfolded provinces and national associations have published stronger guidelines and taken more decisive action in a number of areas, including sporting events. It has become apparent that the rapidly evolving situation will continue to disrupt regular life for an undetermined time.
Curling Canada’s final scheduled national curling championship, the 2020 Canadian Under-18 boys and girls championship, will be postponed indefinitely due to concerns of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), it was announced by Curling Canada.
The event was scheduled for April 20-25 in Sudbury, Ont.
Last week, Curling Canada also indefinitely postponed the national mixed doubles and seniors championships, which were scheduled for this week in Portage la Prairie, Man., as well as the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship, which was to be played in Boucherville, Que., from April 25-30.
“We’d like to thank the host committee and volunteers in Sudbury for all of the hard work they did in preparing to host the Under-18 championships,” said Katherine Henderson, Chief Executive Officer of Curling Canada. “We share their disappointment, and that of the athletes, but we are united in understanding the gravity of the current situation and the need to make decisions such as this to keep everyone as safe as possible.”
As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve, Coaching PEI and Sport PEI are endeavoring to make the best decisions possible for staff and tenants.
Effective March 17, 2020 at 5:00 pm, the Royalty Centre (and Sport PEI) will be closed to the general public.
Coaching PEI with the help of their Coach Developers has three online workshops ready to go Free for Island Coaches thanks to the financial help of the PEI Government.
Team Zacharias, World Junior Women’s Curling Champions, have announced that their team will be sticking together for the next season. The team includes New Dominion PEI’s Lauren Lenentine.
As our season has officially come to an end, we are super excited to announce that we be sticking together for next season! After a great season together, on and off the ice, we are so excited to see what the future holds for us. pic.twitter.com/89f6v791CJ
To our valued members. The Crapaud Community Curling Club will be closed for the remainder of the season. There will be somebody at the club on the following dates for members to empty their lockers: Thursday March 19th 6:30 to 10 p.m. Monday March 23rd 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday March 24th to 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday March 25th to 4 to 8 p.m.
Chase the Ace is suspended until April 6th with a future announcement at that time. On behalf of the Board of Directors, stay safe.
Our main concern is the safety and well-being of the entire curling community. As a result, we are having to make difficult decisions that are significantly affecting what we do and how we offer our services and programs. In partnership with our Member Associations, Curling Canada is strongly urging all curling centres in Canada, both affiliated and non-affiliated, to immediately temporarily suspend all domestic sanctioned curling activities, until further notice, in light of the public health risks associated with COVID-19.
While we recognize that this is a decision that can only be made by a club and/or league, we all share a responsibility to minimize risks related to COVID-19. One of the most important measures we can take is to limit public gatherings and therefore we urge all of you to educate yourselves on this topic and listen to what subject-matter experts are saying.
We empathize especially with the athletes and coaches who are so deeply affected by this situation. Curling Canada is committed to continue working alongside our partners to ensure that we are making informed decisions, in alignment with our values, while continuing to work towards the best possible outcome for all those involved in our sport and the broader community. We will continue to closely monitor all COVID-19 developments in consultation with relevant public health authorities, other governing bodies, and our provincial/territorial partners to provide updates as they become available.
For your convenience, we have provided links to official government communications that cover your respective jurisdictions:
These are difficult and unprecedented time as a world community. We are standing together as caring organizations who will find new ways to adjust to these unpredictable times. Please reach out to us if you need any further support.
