Suzanne Birt will represent Prince Edward Island at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts to be held in Charlottetown next month.

Birt defeated the Kathy O’Rourke team by a score of 7-3 in action Monday afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club.

O’Rourke needed to win this game in order to have a second chance to win the provincial championship. Her team was last year’s provincial champion, and won silver at the national event.

In the Monday afternoon draw at the P.E.I. provincial women’s championship, the Birt team scored one in the second end, two in the fourth end, and one each in the seventh and eighth ends.

The ninth end was a blank, and the Birt team stole three in the 10th end for the win.

The O’Rourke team scored single points in the third, fifth and sixth ends.

“It feels great,” Birt said after her rink’s victory. “I mean, I’ve never been in such a huge provincial before and there were so many great shots today. We’re just so excited to be playing at our hometown in the Civic Centre.”

Eric Pidgeon should be back in action on Tuesday after on-ice collapse at Cdn. Jrs

After spending the night in hospital when he collapsed on the ice, Prince Edward Island second Eric Pidgeon was back at the rink Monday at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Calgary.

He didn’t play, but after going through a series of tests and recovering for a day, is expected to be back in action Tuesday.

His father, Peter, said doctors said his son’s issues stemmed from fatigue and the altitude.

“It was all of that and it plays on a person,” he said.

After making sure he didn’t have blood-clot issues, Eric was released.

Calgarian Dylan Webster played for the P.E.I. squad, having received word Sunday evening.

“It took a while to fall asleep,” said Webster, who plays out of the North Hill club. “It’s cool to be here.

“Their times, what they do for weight calls is the same as my team. It really wasn’t a hard transition.”

Guardian Photo: Suzanne Birt’s rink has won the P.E.I. Scotties title and advances to the national final in Charlottetown, Feb. 19-27.

Suzanne Birt’s rink will represent Prince Edward Island at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 19-27.

Birt of the Charlottetown Curling Club scored three in the 10th end to break open a close game, defeating clubmate Kathy’O’Rourke 7-3.

After opening the game with a blank, the teams virtually traded single points until the final end.

Birt put her rink in a position to win the provincial title today after scoring a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind win Sunday night at the Cornwall Curling Club. O’Rourke led that game 7-4 after eight ends.

So, Birt and her rink — third Shelly Bradley, second Robyn MacPhee and lead Leslie MacDougall — will be carrying the P.E.I. flag when the national women’s curling championship comes to the Charlottetown Civic Centre in two weeks.

A deuce in the third end, followed by a steals of three, one, and two points in the next three ends helped propel the Carol Sweetapple rink from Cornwall a 9-1 win over their clubmates, the Diane MacKay foursome this afternoon to repeat as PEI Masters women’s champions, as the twice-delayed Marco Polo Land PEI Masters wrapped up at the Charlottetown Curling Club.

MacKay advanced to this afternoon’s final by beating six-time champion Jeanne Duffenais  this morning by a 7-4 score in the B final of this double-knockout event. Duffenais had earlier beaten Sweetapple 7-1 in the B semi-final. while Sweetapple won the A final on Wednesday, 8-6 over Charlottetown’s Valerie MacLean rink.

Other members of the winning Sweetapple rink are Marie MacDonald, Danielle Girard, and Marjorie Matthews, while Sherren MacKinnon, Judy Koke and Ruth Stavert round out the runner-up MacKay foursome.

Meanwhile, the  Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside edged out the Bill Hope foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club by a 5-4 score on Sunday evening to win men’s final. Although the event was hosted by the Charlottetown Curling Club, Sunday’s game was played at the Fox, as some of the players were not able to compete during the ice time scheduled for Monday in Charlottetown, after a Thursday storm delay, and a Friday postponement due to ice plant problems. Hope had beaten Bernard 7-2 in the “B” section final, played at the Cornwall Curling Club on Friday afternoon.

In Sunday evening’s final, the Hope rink scored first, with the teams trading single points in each end and Bernard stealing  one point in the seventh end of the eight end game to force an extra end, where Bernard had hammer and picked up the win. Playing with Bernard were Ted MacFadyen, Lou Nowlan, and Earle Proude, while the runner-up Hope team included Craig Mackie, David Murphy, and John DeLuca.

Sixteen men’s and four women’s teams took part in the double-knockout event for curlers age 60 and over.

Winners and runners-up earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships, February 14-19,  at the Charlottetown Curling Club. Winners may also participate in the Canadian Masters, March 30 to April 5 at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg.

Good night for the Yukon, not so good for PEI at Cdn. Jrs. (CCA)

(CCA) While the Saskatchewan men and women remain unbeaten, along with the Alberta women, at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Calgary, there was also some celebration Sunday night for one of the lesser lights.

They may not be on the leaderboard, at least not yet, but it was definitely a good night for the Yukon.

Team Yukon at the 2011 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors(Photo by: Vern Jones) Sunday evening, both the men’s and women’s teams from Whitehorse scored impressive wins. Thomas Scoffin, who owns the record for being the youngest to ever skip at the Juniors (age 12 in 2007), led his team to an 8-4 victory over Nova Scotia (Kendal Thompson of Halifax), while Sarah Koltun directed her teammates to a 6-2 decision over Nova Scotia’s Lindsay Doucet of Chester.

Saskatchewan, with Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon at the controls, laid a 13-6 pounding on Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall).

In men’s, Saskatchewan’s Braeden Moskowy of Regina, who finished in third place last year, walloped Prince Edward Island (Spencer Pitre of Charlottetown), 12-3, to retain sole possession of first place at 5-0.

The Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside edged out the Bill Hope foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club by a 5-4 score on Sunday evening to win the twice-delayed final in the Marco Polo Land Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over.

In this evening’s final, the Hope rink scored first, with the teams trading single points in each end and Bernard stealing  one point in the seventh end of the eight end game to force an extra end, where Bernard had hammer and picked up the win. Playing with Bernard are Ted MacFadyen, Lou Nowlan, and Earle Proude, while the runner-up Hope team includes Craig Mackie, David Murphy, and John DeLuca.

Meanwhile, the women’s Masters “B” section final, between Diane MacKay of Cornwall and Jeanne Duffenais of the Silver Fox, will be contested Monday at 10 am back at the Charlottetown club.  The “B” final winner then faces  “A” final winner and defending champion Carol Sweetapple  from Cornwall in the 1 pm championship final, also at Charlottetown.

Sixteen men’s and four women’s teams took part in the double-knockout event.

Birt steals deuce in dramatic PEI Scotties C final win

The Suzanne Birt rink stole a deuce in the final end in a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind finish tonight in a very close  Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Curling Championship “C” final against the Kathy O’Rourke rink  at the Cornwall Curling Club.

Birt was down 7-4 after eight ends, but narrowed the gap in the ninth with a deuce. In the 10th,  Erin Carmody, who throws fourth rock for O’Rourke, missed a hit on a Birt rock sitting on the button, giving Birt the steal of two. Five time PEI Scotties and former world junior champion Birt, with teammates Shelly Bradley, Robyn MacPhee, and Leslie MacDougall won sections  “A” and “C” in the triple knockout, while defending champion and last year’s Canadian runner-up O’Rourke took the “B” section.

Capturing the  two sections gives Birt a big advantage in Monday’s two game championship round, as winning either the 1:30 or the 6:30 game would give her the PEI championship, while O’Rourke,  and her team of Carmody, third Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and lead Tricia Affleck would have to win both games for a repeat championship win. As both Birt and O’Rourke curl out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, the winning team tomorrow will get to play before a home town crowd at the Canadian Scotties, February 19-27 at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
