WOMEN’S POOL PLAY CONCLUDES AT 2022 NEW HOLLAND CANADIAN UNDER-21 CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Thursday morning marked the end of pool play from the 2022 New Holland Canadian Under-21 Curling Championships at the Stratford Rotary Complex in Stratford, Ont.
And with the men’s playoff picture having already been decided last night, the women’s playoff bracket of the event has now been set.
Out of two pools of nine teams, the top three of each pool qualify for the playoffs. The top team of each pool is rewarded for their first-place finish and receives a bye to a semifinal, whereas the second and third rank teams of each pool will cross over and play the opposite seed of the other pool in a #2 vs. #3 page matchup.
The winner of the #2 vs. #3 page match will proceed to a semifinal. The loser is eliminated.
Semifinal winners will then face off in the final, vying for a gold medal and the right to be Canada’s representative at the 2023 World Junior Curling Championships to be held next season (date and location TBC).
In pool A, Northern Ontario’s Katy Lukowich (7-1; Sudbury) stood above the rest and secured first place where they’ll enjoy a bye to a semifinal. In second is New Brunswick’s Celia Evans (5-3; Oromocto) with Alberta #1’s Serena Gray-Withers (5-3; Edmonton) taking third overall by virtue of a loss to New Brunswick in draw 16.

Pool B had Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens (8-0; Halifax) completing their undefeated run and earning the pool’s top spot and, along with it, a bye to a semifinal Friday morning. Ontario #1’s Emily Deschenes (6-2; Ottawa) was next best finishing second overall and Alberta #2’s Claire Booth (5-3; Calgary) rounds out the women’s playoff picture in third.
In upcoming page #2 vs. #3 playoff matches, Ontario #1 will face Alberta #1 and New Brunswick will take on Alberta #2.
The #2 vs. #3 page matches are scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. (all times eastern).
Semifinals at the 2022 New Holland Canadian Under-21 Curling Championships are set for 9 a.m. on Friday followed by the finals at 2:30 p.m on the same day.
All draws on sheet B are being live streamed on Curling Canada’s Youtube page, available here.

MEN’S PLAYOFF PICTURE SET AS POOL PLAY CONCLUDES AT 2022 NEW HOLLAND CANADIAN UNDER-21 CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
When the dust would settle on men’s pool play at the 2022 New Holland Canadian Under-21 Curling Championships from the Stratford Rotary Complex in Stratford, Ont., only six teams would remain.
Out of two pools of nine teams, the top three of each pool qualify for the playoffs. The top team of each pool is rewarded for their first place finish and receives a bye to a semifinal, whereas the second and third rank teams of each pool will cross over and play the opposite seed of the other pool in a #2 vs.
The winner of pool A is Saskatchewan #1’s Daymond Bernath (7-1; Saskatoon) who receives a bye to the semifinal. Finishing second was Alberta #1’s Johnson Tao (7-1; Edmonton) followed by Newfoundland and Labrador’s Nathan Young (7-1; St. John’s) in third.
All three teams concluded pool play with matching records and had equal 1-1 records in round robin play head-to-head, so Last Stone Draw distances were used to break the ties.
In pool B, Manitoba #1’s Jordon McDonald (7-1; Winnipeg) finished first overall and will receive a bye to the semifinal. Ontario #1’s Landan Rooney (7-1; Whitby) earned a second place finish as their only loss in pool play came at the hands of Manitoba #1. Rounding out the playoff picture is British Columbia #1’s Connor Deane (6-2; New Westminster) in third place.
The men’s #2 vs. #3 page matches are scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. (all times eastern). Ontario #1 (B2) will face Newfoundland and Labrador #1 (A3) and Alberta #1 (A2) squares off versus British Columbia #1 (B3).
The semifinals are set for 9 a.m. on Friday followed by the finals at 2:30 p.m on the same day.
Women’s pool play will conclude tomorrow with draw 18 tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
All draws are being live streamed on Curling Canada’s Youtube page, available here.

PEI’s Rachel MacLean rink stole a deuce in the last end for a 7-6 win over Quebec 2’s Jolianne Fortin rink on Tuesday morning to sit at 2-3 win-loss at the 2022 New Holland U21 Curling Championships in Stratford Ontario.
Watch this game on YouTube:
Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens rink, which includes PEI’s Lauren Ferguson at 3rd stone, is undefeated at 6-0 in their pool, while Northern Ontario’s Katy Lukowich rink, which includes Islander Katie Shaw, is 4-1 in the other pool, close behind first-place Alberta #1’s Serena Gray-Withers squad at 5-1.

Here are the teams and draw/schedule for this Saturday’s U13 Funspiel at Cornwall:

This day promises to be a ton of fun!!
The young curlers will be welcomed with fruit and pastries for registration that begins at 9:00 am and will run until 9:45 am…Curlers will also receive a Gatorade or water….to keep them hydrated for the day. They will curl one 4-end game, have a pizza lunch, followed by another 4-end game. The day will wrap up with prizes and thank you’s at around 2:30.
This event would not be possible without primary event sponsor O’Connor Glass, along with Cavendish Farms.

Monday was an important and ultimately an exceptionally successful day for Daymond Bernath and his Saskatchewan #1 rink at the 2022 New Holland Canadian Under-21 Championships from the Stratford Rotary Complex in Stratford, Ont.
Bernath (6-0; Saskatoon) found himself staring down the barrel of a two game day with two other teams keeping pace at the top of pool A in the likes of Johnson Tao (5-0; Edmonton) and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Nathan Young (5-1; St. John’s).
If Bernath wanted to hang around at the top of the standings, his team would need to produce a pair of victories.
Saskatchewan #1 would make short work of its first challenge in Monday morning’s draw 9, as they defeated a winless New Brunswick rink represented by Rajan Dalrymple (0-6; Oromocto) by a 10-2 score in eight ends.
A steady start, but Bernath would be slated to face a then still undefeated Newfoundland and Labrador team in Monday evening’s draw 11. It would serve as an integral win and give the Saskatchewan #1 rink a distinct advantage in the standings of pool play, should they pull it off.
Turns out they were up to the challenge, and then some.
Newfoundland and Labrador started strong with a score of two in the first end, applying pressure to Saskatchewan #1 early, but it would only awaken Bernath and Co.
The Saskatchewan #1 team then found their stride, outscoring their opposition 8-1 over the next four ends. It would be more than enough to claim an eventual 9-6 victory.
Though Saskatchewan #1 now sits alone atop pool A’s standings, Alberta #1’s Johnson Tao is not far behind. The Alberta representatives boast a 5-0 record and a game in hand as they had the evening off on Monday. They’re set to face Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. (all times eastern).
Saskatchewan #1 is scheduled to face Alberta #1 on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in what is sure to be a standings-defining match.
In other Monday evening action, Northern Ontario’s Dallas Burgess (2-3; Kakabeka Falls) downed the Northwest Territories’ Mason MacNeil (0-5; Inuvik) 14-3. Ontario #1’s Landon Rooney (4-1; Whitby) defeated British Columbia’s Connor Deane (3-2; New Westminster) by a score of 9-4 while Manitoba #1’s Jordon McDonald (5-1; Winnipeg) bested Québec’s Dimitri Audibert (2-3; Riverbend/Trois-Rivières) by an 8-3 score. Saskatchewan #2’s Nathen Pomedli (4-2; Saskatoon) earned a 7-4 win over Newfoundland and Labrador #2’s Sean O’Leary (1-4; St. John’s).
Mitchell Schut, in an earlier game vs. Alberta (Curling Canada photo)
Prince Edward Island’s Mitchell Schut (2-3; Cornwall) defeated Manitoba #2’s Aaron Van Ryssel (1-4; Dugald) 8-4 while Nova Scotia’s Nick Mosher (3-2; Halifax) took the victory over New Brunswick by a 9-5 score and Ontario #2’s Dylan Niepage (2-3; Guelph) picked up a 6-3 win over British Columbia #2’s Adam Fenton (1-4; New Westminster).
The 2022 New Holland Canadian Under-21 Curling Championships continue Tuesday at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. All draws are being live-streamed on Curling Canada’s Youtube page, available here.

The 2022 PEI Curling Club Championships, with 7 men’s and 4 women’s teams who won their respective club championships, continue at the Summerside Curling Club. Following Friday play there are two unbeaten (3-0) rinks in the round-robin men’s section — the Cornwall team, skipped by Robbie Doherty, and the Jamie Newson-skipped Summerside foursome , while the Montague team, captained by Lynn Anne Brousseau, and the Summerside rink skipped by Veronica Smith are both 2-1 in the double round-robin women’s division.
The winning men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the 2022 Everest Curling Club Championships, Nov. 20-26, 2022 at a location to be named.
Round robin action wraps up on Saturday. Tiebreaker games will not be played. When teams are tied for a Championship Round position, their round-robin game against each other will determine their ranking and therefore how the teams are positioned in the playoff draws. If there is an insolvable tie, the last stone draw distance will determine the rankings. The top 3 teams in both divisions advance to the Sunday Championship Round. 2nd place plays 3rd, with the winner taking on the first-place team in the championship game. If the 1st place team was unbeaten in the round-robin but loses the championship match, a 2nd championship game will then be played.

The 2022 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships will run for the first time in two years, and with it is a new crop of talented curlers under the age of 21 who are vying for an opportunity to make their mark on the game.
Of the 154 junior men and women curlers set to compete at the Stratford Rotary Complex in Ontario from March 25-April 1, only 21 players competed at a national under-21 event before. While there will be many first-time appearances at this event, it will be the second time this season some of the country’s best junior-aged teams have competed on a national stage. In November 2021, teams headed to Saskatoon for the New Holland World Junior Qualifier, the event that determined Canada’s junior men’s and women’s teams at the upcoming 2022 World Junior Curling Championships from May 15-22 in Jönköping, Sweden.

Northern Ontario’s women’s team, skipped by Isabelle Ladouceur, claimed the title and will represent Canada later this year. And while Ladouceur has aged out of juniors, her team lineup will compete in Stratford with Katy Lukowich (alternate for the team at the world junior qualifier) slotting in at skip with vice-skip Jamie Smith, second Lauren Rajala, lead Katie Shaw and coach Steve Acorn of Curl Sudbury.
Another team with goals of claiming the coveted championship is Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens, who made the semifinals at the qualifier earlier this year. Stevens, the 2020 under-21 bronze-medallist, skips a re-tooled team with former Prince Edward Island skip Lauren Ferguson at third.
Nova Scotia’s Owen Purcell won the men’s event; however, the team is not age-eligible for the New Holland Canadian Juniors. But a team that won the hearts of Canadian curling fans earlier this month will be at the event. Newfoundland & Labrador’s Team Nathan Young has had a storybook season. First, the team finished as the runner-up to Purcell at the qualifier. Then it qualified to represent Newfoundland & Labrador at the 2022 Tim Hortons Brier. The team went 1-7 in Lethbridge, Alta., and it served as an ideal tune-up event for the New Holland Canadian Juniors.
In addition to Team Young, five of the six teams involved in the qualifier playoffs are back in the field and poised to make a run at the Canadian juniors. Semifinalists Team Daymond Bernath of Saskatchewan returns with its original lineup, while Ontario’s Team Landan Rooney is also in the mix with a shuffled lineup. Quarterfinalists Team Jordon McDonald of Manitoba and Team Johnson Tao of Alberta will also compete at full slate.
And on the line at the end of the week are the men’s and women’s spots as Team Canada at the 2023 World Junior Curling Championships to be held next season (date and location TBC).
It will be the largest field of men’s and women’s teams to ever play at the New Holland Canadian Juniors, with 18 teams in both junior men’s and junior women’s competition. There are 14 Member Association teams, one host team – competing as Ontario 2 – and three teams selected based on Member Association cumulative results from the 2019 and 2020 junior championships. If a Member Association does not send a team, its place is filled by the next highest qualified team on the two-year rolling berth spots list.
Nunavut did not send a team to the women’s event, meaning four additional spots were awarded based on two-year rolling berths. The teams are Alberta 2, Nova Scotia 2, Manitoba 2 and Quebec 2.
Nunavut and Yukon did not send teams in the men’s event, meaning five additional spots were awarded based on two-year rolling berths. The teams are: Saskatchewan 2, Manitoba 2, Newfoundland & Labrador 2, British Columbia 2 and Alberta 2.
Curling Canada expanded the field due to the cancelled national championship in 2021 to allow more youth curlers to experience the national championships and develop their skills.
The teams are separated into two pools of nine teams and play an eight-game round robin. The top three teams advance to the playoffs and there will be no tiebreaker games.
The first-place teams in each pool receive a bye into the semifinals, and the second- and third-placed teams cross over to play against each other (2A vs. 3B; 2B vs. 3A). The winners of the cross-over games advance to the semifinals. The semifinals winner advance to the gold-medal game, and the losers will play in the bronze-medal match.
Select games will be live-streamed on Curling Canada’s YouTube page.
The 2022 New Holland Canadian Juniors is also notable for the number of past For the Love of Curling scholarship recipients in the field, with nine scholars over the past two years, including:
2021 – Jordon McDonald, Jamie Smith, Johnson Tao
2020 – Lauren Ferguson, Dylan Neipage, Jaedon Neuert, Lauren Rajala, Taylour Stevens, Nathan Young
Ontario teams have won 12 Canadian junior championships, the latest in 2010 when both Jake Walker and Rachel Homan won the national titles for their province. Other previous winners were John Morris in 1998 and ’99, Kim Gellard in 1993, Noel Herron in 1990, Alison Goring 1983, John Base in 1982, Mark McDonald in 1973, William Hope in 1968, Ian Johnston in 1957 and Bob Walker in 1953.

The 2022 PEI Curling Club Championships, with 7 men’s and 4 women’s teams who won their respective club championships, are set for the Summerside Curling Club from March 24-27. The winning men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the 2022 Everest Curling Club Championships, Nov. 20-26, 2022 at a location to be named.
Here is the draw for the PEI event, with the seven men’s teams playing a round-robin, and the four women’s rinks playing a double round-robin, from Thursday through Saturday.
Live, end by end results will be available at: https://peicurling.com/scoreboard/#!/competitions/7383
Spectators are permitted, but the number will be limited, as this event is being played during Step 2 of the Moving On plan where the number of people interacting at an event is restricted to 100 or fewer each day,
