The Curling Canada Rocks & Rings is growing again, expanding its unique gym-based program to three new cities in 2016. This means over 36 Rocks & Rings instructors will bring the Olympic sport of curling to over 200,000 students across Canada every year. And to think it all started with just one instructor in Toronto seven years ago!

The addition of itravel2000 as a sponsor for the 2015-2016 school year allows the program to expand into Quebec City, Que.; Moncton, N.B; and Lethbridge, Alta.
“We are excited about our partnership with the Curling Canada’s Rocks & Rings program,” says Dave Paterson, itravel2000’s Vice President of Marketing. “itravel2000 is committed to supporting youth and families across Canada and Rocks & Rings is a perfect program for us to be involved with.”
Curling Canada Rocks & Rings continues to work with more curling clubs to adopt local schools and help grow their youth programs.
“We know of five clubs alone in Atlantic Canada that got over 50 new curlers this year after having the Rocks & Rings program sponsored into schools by their local curling club,” says Abbie Darnley, Program Director of Rocks & Rings. “It is certainly a great opportunity for clubs to work with their local schools and support their community by getting a fun interactive program into the school.”
“Stayed tuned,” adds Darnley, “as we will soon have over a million reasons to celebrate the continued growth of the Curling Canada Rocks & Rings program.”
The Veronica Smith rink from Crapaud and Cornwall beat Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson team by a 9-4 score in this afternoon’s championship game at the Atelka Provincial Mixed (Fours) Curling Championship at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Smith won her second modified triple knockout section final this morning, 8-2 over Newson, stealing two singles and a deuce in the C final. She also won the B section over Newson on Sunday afternoon by a 7-6 score, while Newson won the A, 8-5 over Smith on Saturday.

Winning two sections meant that Smith had two chances to win the final, while Newson would have had to win 2 games straight. Had she lost this afternoon, a deciding game between the two teams would have been played on Tuesday.
In the final, Smith got off to a fast start with a triple in the first end. Newson came back with a double in end two, but Smith took a pair of singles and a deuce in the next 3 ends for a 6-2 lead after 5 ends. The teams traded deuces in six and seven, but Newson couldn’t catch up.

The winning Smith team includes third Tyler Smith, second stone Sabrina Smith, and lead Dylan Lowery, while Vanessa Hamming, Tyler Harris, and Miranda Ellis round out the runner-up Newson foursome. Veronica and Sabrina Smith are sisters, while Tyler is not related.
Team Veronica Smith will now advance to the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, Nov. 14-19, 2016, at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, NS. The Mixed Fours are the traditional 4 person competition, while the Mixed Doubles is the newer 2 person format, which has a separate championship.
The Veronica Smith rink from Crapaud and Cornwall has an advantage going into the two game championship against Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson rink at the Atelka Provincial Mixed (Fours) Curling Championship being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Smith won her second modified triple knockout section final this morning, 8-2 over Newson, stealing two singles and a deuce in the C final. She also won the B section over Newson on Sunday afternoon by a 7-6 score, while Newson won the A, 8-5 over Smith on Saturday.
Winning two sections means that a Smith win in either this afternoon’s 3 o’clock game, or the second game at 6 pm Tuesday would give her the championship, while Newson would have to win both games to take the title.
The Veronica Smith team includes third Tyler Smith, second stone Sabrina Smith, and lead Dylan Lowery, while Vanessa Hamming, Tyler Harris, and Miranda Ellis round out the Newson foursome.
The winning team will advance to the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, Nov. 14-19, 2016, at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, NS. The Mixed Fours are the traditional 4 person competition, while the Mixed Doubles is the newer 2 person format, which has a separate championship.
The Curl PEI Provincial Junior Mixed Curling Championship, a four player per team Mixed competition with Under 16 and Under 21 divisions, will be held at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, on March 5-6, 2016, with opening draw at 10 am Saturday, and the last draw at 2 pm Sunday. Four Under 16 and two Under 21 teams have signed up. The Under 16 division will play a Round Robin, with all four teams advancing to semi-finals (1st place vs 4th place and 2nd place vs 3rd place), and the winners of the semis going to the final. The Under 21 will place a Best of Five series, with the first team to take three games winning the event. Games are 8 ends. Teams in the U16 division will be ranked as follows after the Round Robin:
Teams will be ranked following the round robin.
By wins and losses of a team;
If teams are tied, the head to head results of tied teams will be used;
If teams are still tied, the cumulative last stone draw measurements (minus the highest draw) will break the tie.
GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – Chelsea Carey took a deep breath in the hack and then delivered a last-rock draw for a single point that earned her Alberta team the Scotties Tournament of Heart championship Sunday evening.
It took Carey’s last rock for her Calgary team of third Amy Nixon, second Jocelyn Peterman, lead Laine Peters, alternate Susan O’Connor and coach Charley Thomas to finally subdue a stubborn Krista McCarville Northern Ontario team 7-6.
“I dreamed of being a Canadian champion since I watched my dad (Dan) do it in ’92 (at the Brier),” a jubilant Carey said after rushing to hug her teammates and her dad. “Oh my God, I have no words honestly … and that doesn’t happen very often.”
Carey, who won the Scotties bronze in 2014 representing Manitoba, had to draw the full eight foot for the win. As she dropped into the hack, she told herself to take her time.
“You tend to rush in those situations,” said Carey, who won the Sandra Schmirler Award as the Scotties playoff MVP. “I just took a bunch of deep breaths and I had just thrown that (draw) so it was exactly the same weight. I just had to trust it was going to be there and luckily it was. You trust your million hours of practice are going to pay off and it did.”

It was fitting the game came down to the final end and the final stones. With a vocal, supportive crowd of 2,678 – it brought the tournament total to 36,854 — urging them on, Carey and McCarville fought a tight cat-and-mouse game through 10 ends. Alberta’s shooting percentage was 87 per cent and Northern Ontario’s was 85.
“It wasn’t a difficult draw but in the circumstances it is a difficult draw and she made it great,” McCarville said of Carey’s last shot. “It wasn’t the result we wanted but we have a lot to take out of this week for next year.”
Trading hit for hit and draw for draw, neither team could break away on the scoreboard. They traded singles in the second and third ends and deuces in the fourth and fifth. It was the first time in four games that Northern Ontario had not trailed at the break.
McCarville, third Kendra Lilly, second Ashley Sippala, lead Sarah Potts, alternate Oye-Sem Won Briand and coach Lorraine Lang got the lead for the first time in the seventh, scoring two on a classic skip’s deuce — two superb draws from McCarville that snuffed out an Alberta steal.
But Alberta came right back with two in eight on Carey’s runback takeout and stick for two. They then forced Northern Ontario to take a single in nine.
Carey had taken the shortest route to the final, going 9-2 in the round-robin, then beating Team Canada 7-5 in the Page 1-2 playoff game.
McCarville went the long route. Her team finished 7-4 and then scored stunning come-from-behind wins in Page 3-4 game (7-5 over Manitoba) and the semifinal (7-5 over Canada).

The Carey team receives $205,900 for the win, including $144,000 in Sport Canada funding over the next two years and 57.024 Canadian Team Ranking System points. Northern Ontario gets $26,900 and 44.805 points as runner-up.
Carey’s team will now wear Team Canada colours at the 2016 Ford World Women’s Championship, presented by Meridian Manufacturing, March 19-27 in Swift Current, Sask.
Should they win a medal at the Ford Worlds, the team will qualify for the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials in Ottawa — the event that will decide Canada’s four-player teams for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Alberta also qualified for the 2016 Home Hardware Canada Cup in Brandon, Man., the 2017 World Financial Group Continental Cup in Las Vegas and the 2017 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in St. Catharines, Ont.
In the bronze-medal game played earlier Sunday, Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg made a last-rock draw for one in the 10th end to give Team Canada an 8-7 win over Kerri Einarson in a game featuring two teams from the same province.
The Veronica Smith rink from Crapaud and Cornwall, and the Jamie Newson team from Charlottetown and Crapaud have each won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, and are now the only teams remaining out of the 9 who began play Friday in the Atelka Provincial Mixed Fours Curling Championships at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Newson won the A final on Saturday, 8-5 over Smith, while Smith, aided by a three point fourth end steal, took the B in an extra end by a 7-6 score Sunday afternoon. The two teams now face off for the third section final — at 11 am Monday, after Smith beat Charlottetown’s Jody Jackson 7-2, and Newson doubled the Tyler MacKenzie rink from Charlottetown 6-3 in the C semi-finals Sunday evening.
The winner of Monday morning’s C final will, as the winner of two sections, have a “double life” in the two game championship round, set for 3 pm Monday and, if needed, 6 pm Tuesday. If that team wins either championship game, they would take the championship, while the other team would have to win both to win the event.
GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – Jennifer Jones made her last-rock draw a successful one to beat Kerri Einarson of Manitoba 8-7 to win the bronze medal game Sunday at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
“It’s nice to finish on a win,” said Jones, who had been seeking her second straight Scotties title and sixth overall. “It’s nice to make the last shot to win.”
That shot earned Team Canada $26,900 and 34.621 CTRS (Canadian Team Ranking System) points for the win while Einarson’s team gets $16,900 and 24.439 points.
(Photo, Curling Canada/Andrew Klaver)
For the veteran Jones team that includes third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer, lead Dawn McEwen, alternate Jennifer Clark-Rouire and coach Wendy Morgan, the win was a nice bounceback from their 7-5 loss to Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario in Saturday’s semifinal.
Jones said her team leaves Grande Prairie knowing it played well and can now refocus on the future.
“It is all about the Olympics,” she said. “We bounced back from a coupe of early losses and really played well as a team so it’s coming together. We’re tried to change a few things this year and I really think the changes will make us stronger in the long run. It’s all about two years from now.”
It may have been a disappointing end to a fairly successful week for the youthful Manitoba team, but Einarson was pleased with her team’s Scotties debut.
“There’s so many great memories. It was such a great experience to be out here,” she said. “I can’t wait to be back. Once you get a taste you want to always come back, so we’ll definitely be back.”

After giving up two in the first end, Manitoba got back on even terms with a single in two and a steal of one in the third. Jones, who had a made a solid hit-and-stick for her deuce in one, rubbed a guard in the third trying for a raise double that could have given her three. Instead Manitoba got the steal and a 2-2 tie.
After giving up two in the fourth, Einarson rebounded with three in the fifth and a 5-4 lead at the break. Manitoba had two counters hidden behind guards, forcing Jones to try a hit-and-roll off her own stone in the eight foot. She only rubbed the rock and rolled out, leading Einarson a draw for three.
They traded singles in seven and eight and Jones got a pair in eight on a last-rock draw for a 7-6 lead. Manitoba pulled even in nine on a straight hit-and-stick, setting the stage for the final 16 rocks.
The gold medal game between Chelsea Carey of Alberta and Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario goes today at 9:30 p.m. AT.
TSN (RDS2 in French), the exclusive television network for Curling Canada’s Season of Champions, will provide complete coverage of the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
The Cornwall Curling Club rink of skip Lauren Lenentine, third Kristie Rogers, second Lily Taweel, and lead Ellie Lenentine, with coach Robbie Lenentine, went undefeated with a 6-0 record to win the Advantage Communications Under 16 Girl’s Championship, which wrapped up this afternoon at the Charlottetown Curling Complex.

The Boy’s title went to the Mitchell Schut rink, also from Cornwall, who were the only entry. Three members of the Schut rink were the U13 champions last year, and the team came third in the U18 men’s championships last weekend. Other members of Team Schut are third Colin MacKenzie, second Michael MacEwen, and lead Liam Kelly, with coach Nancy Yeo.

The Lauren Ferguson foursome from the Silver Fox and Crapaud clubs, which included Tegan Corkum, Olivia Barbour, and Megan MacDonald, with coach Shelley MacFadyen, were runners-up in the Girl’s event, with a 4-2 win-loss record.

The Emma Coffin rink from Cornwall also finished at 4-2, but lost to Ferguson in their round robin encounter. Cornwall’s Alexis Burris and Rachel MacLean teams wrapped up play with 3-3 and 2-4 win-loss records, respectively, while Emily Sanderson from Montague and Katie Shaw from Charlottetown went 1-5.
The Girl’s Sportsmanship award, as voted on by the curlers in the event, went to Baily O’Grady, third on the Emma Coffin team.

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – As Yogi Berra reputedly said, it was like deja-vu all over again.
Krista McCarville and her Northern Ontario team from Thunder Bay simply refused to quit on Saturday, scoring back-to-back come-from-behind victories Saturday to advance to Sunday’s final at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
McCarville, third Kendra Lilly, second Ashley Sippala, lead Sarah Potts, alternate Oye-Sem Won Briand and coach Lorraine Lang stole three points in the final two ends to upset Jennifer Jones of Team Canada 7-5 in Saturday night’s semifinal at Revolution Place.
They did the same thing to steal their way to victory in the Page 3-4 game with Manitoba earlier in the day.
They are, said Lilly, a team of destiny.
“There’s been quite a few things along this week that have us saying to ourselves, ‘This is destiny.’ We feel this is our year so we’re going to bring it the next game,” she said.
And McCarville agreed totally.
“Absolutely we believe that. We’ve had such a great year together.”
They were in a struggle against Jones through five ends but outscored Team Canada 5-1 in the final five to grab the victory.
“I don’t even really know what just happened,” said a jubilant Lilly. “Throughout the whole week that’s pretty much our story. In the last five ends is where we strive. We’re able to put the pressure on and steal and it’s gotten us to the Scotties final.”
Jones had a chance for one in 10 that would have forced an extra end but her final stone draw came up short, letting Northern Ontario steal a single.
“We let that one slip away,” said Jones. “But they played a great second half and we just weren’t good enough today.
In the final half Jones said she “missed a couple of draws. That hit-and-roll-out in nine let the girls down. But we had a great week and hopefully we’ll be back.”
Jones, who like her second Jill Officer was seeking her record-tying sixth Scotties championship, and Team Canada lead Dawn McEwen were scored at a perfect 100 per cent with their shots through five ends.
That, combined with some key misses by Northern Ontario, allowed Canada to score deuces in the first and third ends for a 4-1 lead.
But both had misses in the sixth end. And when Jones came up half a foot short with her last-rock draw to the button, McCarville stole one, only the sixth time all tournament that Canada had allowed a stolen point.
The teams traded singles in the seventh and eighth – Jones was a foot too heavy with her last-rock draw for two in seven and McCarville made a cold draw to the button against three Canada counters in eight.
After she and Lawes both missed with attempted doubles in the ninth, Jones attempted to hit for one but shooter stunningly rolled out to let McCarville steal two for a 6-5 lead.

Jones, third Kaitlyn Lawes, Officer, McEwen, alternate Jennifer Clark-Rouire and coach Wendy Morgan (who missed the game due to illness) will now play Kerri Einarson of Manitoba (East St. Paul) in Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. AT bronze medal game.
McCarville will play Chelsea Carey of Alberta in Sunday’s championship final at 6:30 p.m. MT.
The gold-medal champion will represent Canada at the Ford World Women’s Championship, presented by Meridian Manufacturing, March 19-27 in Swift Current, Sask.
Also, the Scotties champion will qualify for the 2016 Home Hardware Canada Cup next December in Brandon, Man., as well as the 2017 World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by Boyd Gaming, in Las Vegas.
And should the Scotties champs win a medal at the Ford Worlds in Swift Current, they will also qualify for the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in Ottawa — the event that will decide Canada’s four-player teams for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Come have a delicious pancake breakfast any time between 9 AM and 12 PM today at the Montague Curling Club, with proceeds for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
Day two is over at the nine team Atelka PEI Mixed Fours Curling Championship at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, and the Jamie Newson rink from Charlottetown and Crapaud is in the lead in the modified triple knockout event. They edged the Sharon Horne team from the host club 5-4 this morning to advance to the 2 pm A section final against the Veronica Smith team from Crapaud and Cornwall, which the Newson squad, which includes Vanessa Hamming, Tyler Harris, and Miranda Ellis, won by an 8-4 score.
Newson then edged Montague and Crapaud’s Cody Dixon rink 5-4 in the 6 pm draw to advance to the B final at 2 pm Sunday, where he’ll take on the winner of a 10 am game between Veronica Smith and Sharon Horne. The C semi-finals go 6 pm Sunday, with the C final at 11 am Monday.
Unless Newson wins all three section finals, the two game championship round goes Monday at 3 pm and, if necessary, Tuesday at 6.
The rink of Lorianne Davies, Lynda Turnbull, Lisa MacEachern, and Angela Sanderson, from the Cornwall Curling Club are the winners of the annual Pink Ladies spiel, which wrapped up this evening at the Montague Curling Rink.
The Lauren Lenentine rink from the Cornwall Curling Club is the only undefeated rink, at 5-0, following Saturday play at the Advantage Communications Under 16 Girls Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. Lenentine, with Kristie Rogers at third, and two young curlers – Lily Taweel and Ella Lenentine at second and lead, played three games today, winning 10-2 over Cornwall clubmate Rachel MacLean, 8-3 over Montague’s Emily Sanderson, and 12-6 over Lauren Ferguson of the Silver Fox and Crapaud clubs.
Photo: Lauren Lenentine
Emma Coffin, also from Cornwall, is currently second with a 3-1 win-loss record, with MacLean, Ferguson, and Burris all at 2-2. Sanderson is at 1-4, with Charlottetown’s Katie Shaw at 0-4.
Two draws remain, at 10 and 2 Sunday, with Sanderson having the bye in the first draw and Lenentine in the second. The top two teams following round robin play will be the event winner and runner-up.
Lenentine is assured a first place finish as she has only one game left, and can finish no worse than 5-1, while Coffin, should she win both her games, would have the same record, and would finish second, as she lost to Lenentine in their round robin encounter.
Closing ceremonies will follow the 2 pm Sunday final round robin draw, with presentations to the girl’s winner and runner-up teams, and to the Mitchell Schut team from Cornwall, who, as the only entry, won the boy’s championship by default.
